Advancing medical knowledge in the interest of excellent patient care is a major focus of Hartford 

Hospital. The hospital’s long-standing commitment to educating physicians and other medical professionals 

is evident today in the remarkable amount of teaching and learning that takes place here every day. 

One of Hartford Hospital’s chief educational roles is the training of residents—individuals 

who have graduated from medical school and are now acquiring the clinical experience and advanced 

knowledge required to be autonomous attending physicians. The departments featured in this report 

represent a few examples of the many residency programs offered at Hartford Hospital. (See back inside 

cover for complete list.) We are the main clinical teaching facility for the University of Connecticut 

School of Medicine’s residency program, offer several residency programs of our own, and train residents 

from other programs in the Northeast. Every year, approximately 450 residents train here. The quality 

and experience of the faculty and the volume and complexity of cases make Hartford Hospital an 

exceptional learning environment. “This is where residents learn to become real doctors,” notes 

Neil Yeston, MD, the hospital’s Vice President of Academic Affairs. 

The constant flow of knowledge between attending physicians—the faculty—and residents 

promotes excellence in clinical care. “Students and residents stimulate teachers in their own quests 

for knowledge,” Dr. Yeston says. “This creates a vibrancy that heightens the quality of care throughout 

the institution. If we didn’t educate residents, we would still be a good hospital, but we wouldn’t be 

a great hospital.” 

Hartford Hospital’s educational activities benefit the larger world, as well. Knowledge and 

expertise residents and others obtain here will travel with them as they pursue their careers and teach 

others in turn. 

For doctors, nurses and health professionals of all kinds, excellence in medicine demands a 

relentless, unending quest for new knowledge. Only by being a community of continuous learners can 

we provide the very finest medical care for patients now and in the future.

Neil Yeston, MD

It takes five years of rigorous residency training following medical school to become a general surgeon. 

Surgeons who wish to become board certified in subspecialty areas such as thoracic, vascular or neurological 

surgery must pursue additional training. Hartford Hospital annually trains 46 general-surgery residents through 

its integrated residency program with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. At any one time, 23 

surgical residents are working at Hartford Hospital. 

Surgical residents work alongside faculty in the operating room, assisting in the performance of surgical 

procedures under the close supervision of the attending physician. As they acquire knowledge and skill, they 

take on increasingly complex cases, and they help educate more junior residents. 

For surgeons, manual dexterity—manipulating instruments, tying sutures, using sophisticated technology—is 

just as important as medical knowledge. Junior residents practice these skills outside the operating room in 

Hartford Hospital’s Center for Advanced Technology, using a high-tech laparoscopy box trainer and video-assisted 

simulation trainers to perfect their techniques.

very high standards. So a teaching hospital, by definition, has 

attending physicians who are up to date and outstanding in 

their fields, and medical technology that is the most advanced 

available. Personally, I would insist on being admitted to a 

teaching hospital for these reasons and because the presence 

of residents would mean that multiple minds would be focused 

on my care.

“I enjoy teaching because I find it very satisfying to help residents acquire new knowledge or skills. It’s almost like 

rearing children. The residents are with me for five years, and as I see them develop and grow into fine surgeons, 

I’m proud of them. I’ll often see some of my former residents at national meetings, and they’re doing great things. 

Teaching comes back to reward you. Residents teach us new things all the time. And we teach them, not only how 

to operate, but also how to take care of the whole patient and think about the family’s needs. In the operating 

room, I let residents do more and more as they gain expertise. The final decision in the OR is always mine, but as 

I tell my residents, ‘You can’t learn surgery in the library.’”

patients. I think that the clinical component of our education is one of the strongest in the country. In the 

operating room, there’s a lot of intensity. You develop an extremely intimate relationship with your teachers because 

you spend so much time together as they work to make you a better surgeon. They have to teach you not only to 

use your hands like a surgeon, but to think like a surgeon. My residency prepared me very well to go out into the 

world and take care of patients and be a good doctor. A year from now, I’ll be someplace else and operating on my 

own. But I know that, every time I operate on a patient, I’ll hear my teachers’ voices in my head—guiding me,

“The operative experience at Hartford Hospital is exceptional. There are so many talented surgeons here, and every 

time we’re in the operating room, we’re learning. It’s a learning process, but it can’t be a practicing process, where 

a patient would be at risk. As we learn more skills, we’re allowed more responsibility during procedures, under the 

attending’s supervision. If the situation becomes complicated, the attending takes over and we assist, and that’s 

a learning experience, too. It can be stressful. Any critiques from the surgeon aren’t going to be sugar-coated, 

because surgery is a serious situation. As soon as I began my clinical rotation in surgery as a third-year medical 

student, I knew it was what I wanted to do. It is amazing to see inside the body and to potentially fix what’s wrong 

with a patient. From the beginning, I was hooked.”

Throughout its 185-year history, the Institute of Living has been dedicated to expanding the world’s 

body of knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders and their underlying causes. 

Now Hartford Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry, the Institute continues that tradition by educating a host of 

mental health professionals. 

The Institute offers a four-year Adult Psychiatry Residency Program and a two-year Child & Adolescent 

Residency Program, as well as a five-year residency that combines the two. Last year, the Institute became one 

of the first facilities in the country to obtain accreditation for its Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship Program. 

In addition to psychiatric residents and fellows, the Institute constantly educates psychologists; residents 

from other disciplines; medical students; nurses; physician-assistant students; social workers; occupational, 

vocational and recreational therapists; and more. A world-renowned research institution, the Institute offers a 

unique learning environment where scientific discoveries and clinical experience combine to ensure excellence 

in learning, teaching and, most important, patient care.

“I’m a strong proponent of teaching while in the course of providing clinical care. There are aspects of clinical care 

that can’t be spelled out in a book or article—concepts and techniques you have to teach in an interactive way. 

My patients’ families are very accustomed to my having residents in the room. In psychiatry, being in a position 

to hear such personal things about people is a privilege, and one not to be taken lightly. I try to convey that in 

my teaching. To be a good teacher, you have to be able to explain things in the way that’s best for the specific 

students you’re teaching. You can be the most knowledgeable person in the world, but unless you tailor your 

teaching to your students, real learning will not take place. I feel fortunate that, at Hartford Hospital, I can 

be involved in both front-line patient care and academics. Without the opportunity to teach and train, I would 

really feel a little lost.”

“I didn’t set out to be a teacher, but it has become a core component of my professional identity. It makes one 

feel alive and keenly aware of being part of a long chain of people who convey the accumulated knowledge of our 

discipline from one generation to the next. It’s also a way of giving back to teachers and supervisors who gave so 

much to me. In other areas of medicine, teaching is external. Psychiatry can seem mysterious. I try to make it 

less of a mystery by letting residents know what is happening in my mind when I’m working with a patient—why 

I asked that question at that time, why I chose that word, how I sort through the elements of a case and organize 

my thoughts. In psychiatry, answers often can’t be found in lab tests or studies. Residents must learn to use 

themselves as a means of interpretation and engagement. It’s very hard work.”

“I completed three years in the General (Adult) Psychiatry Residency Program, and I’m now in the first of a two-year 

fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. I’ve developed an institutional affection for this place. When it was 

time for my fellowship, I didn’t even apply anywhere else. The attendings here are very dedicated to caring for 

patients and families. They are inspirations and role models for me. They’re very willing to teach, and they allow 

us to grow professionally by giving us the right balance of independence and supervision. One of the best 

aspects of this program is that we’re taught to consider all factors affecting the patient—biological, psychological, 

developmental, family issues, cognitive, social, behavioral and cultural—when making a diagnosis and developing 

a treatment plan. By approaching the patient from all these perspectives, we gain a better understanding and

“I transferred here in my second year of residency because I wanted to spend more time with patients. The Institute’s 

program turned out to be exactly what I wanted. We collaborate closely with the attending physicians, and I learn 

best by watching an expert do what I need to do. The faculty are excellent, and each one has provided something 

valuable to me. There have been ‘Aha!’ moments, when they’ve made crystal clear something that had been opaque. 

Or I’ve been confounded by a patient and an attending will talk with the patient and reveal great insights only 

possible through experience. There’s a stylistic component to practicing psychiatry. You have more leeway to use 

your personal strengths to forge a strong alliance with the patient. In teaching junior residents, I draw many of 

my techniques from attendings, just as my attendings drew from theirs. We’re all bits and pieces of others before us.”

Women’s Health Services at Hartford Hospital is a center of excellence designed to meet the lifelong 

health needs of women. One of the ways it pursues that mission is by educating the medical students, residents 

and fellows who will be the physicians of tomorrow. The department offers summer student fellowships for college 

students considering medicine as a career. It is the primary teaching institution for third-year medical students 

from Dartmouth and the University of Connecticut. 

Hartford Hospital is the largest clinical training site for the University of Connecticut’s four-year 

Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. The program’s 36 residents rotate among three hospitals, with 20 of 

them at Hartford Hospital at any given time. Every year, each resident class presents an award to a faculty member 

for excellence in teaching. Of the 17 awards presented since 2003, 13 have gone to Hartford Hospital faculty.

“I started Hartford Hospital’s Urogynecology Division in 1997, and it’s the only one in the state with a fellowship 

program. Today’s active, working women won’t allow conditions such as urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse to 

curtail their activities. New and improved procedures for addressing these problems needed to be developed and 

made available to women, and the doctors of tomorrow needed to learn about them. That’s why Hartford Hospital 

supported the creation of this world-class program. I have medical students, residents and fellows experience the 

whole continuum of caring for patients. They work with me in my office, in the operating room and on the floors. 

They learn what it really means to take care of a patient. You have to evaluate the patient’s condition, decide on the 

best treatment, perform the procedure and provide follow-up care. But I also show them through my own behavior 

that you have to be devoted and compassionate toward your patients. This is all part of being a physician.”

the patients to make sure they’re correct, 

and we question and teach them.” 

“We’re interacting with residents all the time. Every morning, residents review all the patients who are in the delivery 

room and all the complicated patients on the floor. We listen to what the residents say about the patients to make 

sure they’re correct, and we question and teach them to make sure they’ve thought of everything they should. 

They work with me in the delivery room and they also call me during the day to discuss patients. When I’m on 

call and they phone me at 2 a.m. about a patient, I’ll always say, ‘So, what do you want to do?’ It’s hard to do a lot 

of teaching at 2 a.m., but it’s important because this makes residents stop and think and formulate their own ideas. 

And they’re typically on the right track. As doctors, we have to educate our patients, too, explaining what the 

issue is, what it means and what we’re going to do about it. Residents learn a lot just by listening to me talk to a 

patient, and they’ll know how to do it when they have their own patients.”

“Even when I was young, I wanted to be a doctor. My parents are teachers, and my mother does a lot of community 

service. In school, I focused on the sciences, but also had great experiences providing community service. The 

combination of education, service, and science made medicine the perfect career choice for me. As residents, 

our relationships with the attendings at Hartford Hospital are among the best. The faculty are enthusiastic teachers, 

and the atmosphere is comfortable, so it’s a great learning environment. Faculty treat residents with respect and as 

junior colleagues. Residents are encouraged to take responsibility for the patient, since we have an active part in 

their care. The best attendings are very patient and understanding with residents. They realize that we’re still in our 

training process and that we’re all working together to take care of patients the best possible way. The biggest 

challenge at the beginning of residency is making the transition from medical student to doctor. People’s lives and 

well-being are placed in your care. You’ve wanted to do this all your life ... now it’s here.”

interesting ways to help students learn. Today there are many new ways of learning—the Internet, DVDs, Palm

“Teaching is an honor and a privilege. It is also ‘bidirectional,’ because attendings benefit from it, as well. Medicine 

in the 21st century encompasses a vast, rapidly changing body of knowledge. It’s impossible for anyone to keep up 

with developments in all areas. One of the best resources to have on my service is a medical student or resident. 

They’re conversant with the scientific intricacies some of us might have forgotten—biochemistry, genetics or the 

molecular basis of medicine. The best place for someone who is ill to be is in a teaching hospital. The quality 

and standards of excellence are higher. Patients are looked after by a number of different people who are constantly 

involved in providing care. And in an institution like this one, with a decades-long tradition of education, students 

and residents are so enmeshed in the fabric of patient care that collaboration between medical staff and learners 

is seamless.”

“I have many doctors in my family, and that contributed to my interest in medicine. But the prospect of helping 

people was the greatest motivation of all. As a resident, I spent about 40 percent of each year at Hartford Hospital. 

Because it’s a major inner-city teaching hospital, we see a broad range of patients and have the opportunity to 

learn about and treat diseases we might not encounter elsewhere. We also get to see a large number of patients. It’s 

a very rich learning experience. We are lucky to be surrounded by great faculty members who are both seasoned 

clinicians and dedicated teachers. One of the greatest joys of being a chief resident is teaching medical students 

and residents. In the process of teaching others, we learn so much—and in great depth. It’s also an immense honor 

to be working among faculty members who were our teachers and mentors.”

“I can sum up the quality of the faculty at Hartford Hospital in one word: exceptional. We have great full-time 

faculty members who spend much of their time teaching, and private attendings who go out of their way to 

teach residents, since residents are involved in care of their patients. Even though faculty here have their own 

responsibilities, they are constantly available to us. Anytime we need them, they’re there. Anytime they have an 

opportunity to teach, they go out of their way to do it. The Simulation Center is one of the major advantages 

of Hartford Hospital. It’s one of only 11 in the country, and it provides an opportunity and forum to practice 

complicated procedures safely. Practice improves bedside performance and patient safety and ultimately leads 

to better patient outcomes. Medicine is always evolving. You always have to be learning. You can never be 

satisfied with the amount of knowledge you have.”

Talhat Azemi, MD

Today’s complex health care environment demands the skills of a host of people specially trained in a 

variety of technical fields. These are the professionals who perform diagnostic laboratory tests, collect patient 

blood specimens for analysis, provide radiation and respiratory therapy treatments, perform radiographic imaging 

studies such as X-rays and CT and MRI scans, and provide technical assistance to physicians and others during 

surgical procedures. 

Hartford Hospital’s School of Allied Health performs a vital service for the hospital and for health care 

institutions everywhere by educating more than 100 of these critically important allied health professionals 

every year. The school offers programs in emergency medical services, medical technology, phlebotomy, radiation 

therapy, radiography, respiratory therapy and surgical technology. Some programs are offered in affiliation with 

area colleges and universities, and all programs are fully accredited

“One feature that sets our program apart from almost all others 

is the fact that we have a dedicated faculty. Ours are full-time 

teachers, not people who are trying to balance teaching with the 

performance of their own job responsibilities. We believe that 

this provides a higher quality of education. 

“Educating allied health professionals ourselves lets us 

control what students learn and what they must achieve before 

sitting for certification or licensing exams. We then have the 

opportunity to recruit the top graduates, knowing that they are 

well prepared to meet Hartford Hospital’s high standards. Today, 

about two-thirds of allied health professionals working at Hartford 

Hospital are graduates of our own programs. Many local public 

safety departments rely on Hartford Hospital for pre-hospital 

medical care training. 

“Because the clinical aspect requires a low student/faculty 

ratio, allied health education is an expensive undertaking for 

a hospital. Many have discontinued their programs. But by 

educating professionals who are in such demand, we are better 

able to meet our own staffing needs.”

Nursing education continues to expand to reflect technological advances and new research findings that 

reveal best practices. Today’s nurses must acquire vast amounts of knowledge and skill and perform highly complex 

observations, procedures and treatments, while continuing to promote patient safety and to meet the emotional 

and social needs of their patients. 

Hartford Hospital plays a vital role in preparing nurses for the challenges of the profession. We provide 

a rich clinical experience for undergraduate student nurses from a dozen colleges and universities, and we offer 

a constellation of learning opportunities for our own staff nurses to ensure that they continuously learn new 

techniques and skills and stay current with best practices. 

Approximately 450 students enrolled in area nursing programs at the associate, bachelor’s or master’s 

degree levels study on our campus each year. In 2005 alone, there were 2,900 attendees in continuing education 

classes offered to current Hartford Hospital nurses.

have master’s-level student interns working with me. Teaching 

keeps me energized. I love working with future leaders in the 

profession. It is very rewarding professionally to be developing 

future leaders in nursing, and I see it as part of my responsibility 

in succession planning. 

“Today’s shortage of nursing faculty means that professionals 

in nursing education and nursing service collaborate 

more closely in the education of nursing students. We have 

numerous partnerships and make sure to involve faculty when 

there are significant changes in practice—such as computerized 

order entry—so they and their students are prepared when they 

come into the clinical setting. 

“When faculty and students come to our patient care 

units, our RNs oversee the care being provided. Hartford Hospital 

nurses regularly serve as preceptors for students, and several 

serve as adjunct faculty in college programs.”

available to nurses. We offer a range of educational opportunities, including online courses, group classes, individualized 

classes and precepted experiences. We’ve also expanded our use of the Simulation Center for nurse training 

and education. We hired more than 130 new graduate nurses last year. Each spends the first 10 weeks in our 

internship program, then has monthly sessions with nurse educators. The first year after school is a time of growth. 

Because of the depth of knowledge a nurse needs, a nurse is not counted as ‘experienced’ until on staff for a year 

and a half to two years. We recognize the difficulty of transitioning from school to the highly technical and complex 

health care field.”

Message 

Hartford Hospital’s Board of Directors is the community’s representative in guiding the hospital and 

planning for its future. This year, the hospital embarked on multi-year strategic and facility planning processes to 

ensure that we are well positioned to meet the challenges facing all health care institutions in the years to come. 

The initiative, designed to envision the hospital of the future, will engage all elements of the hospital 

in exploring what Hartford Hospital’s mission, vision and role should be in the future, in light of the evolving 

medical-delivery landscape. This undertaking will involve researching emerging trends in health care, identifying 

national best practices in hospital governance and operations, and revising the strategic and facility plans so that 

they provide a framework for achieving our goals. 

Setting the stage for this undertaking, we are objectively reassessing our governance structure. Although 

the governance system of the hospital is quite sound and has served us well, we are taking the proactive step of 

assessing it against national best practices with the idea of making it even stronger. From a position of strength, 

we can only grow stronger. The board will devote considerable time and effort to this initiative throughout 2007. 

Philanthropy continues to play a critical role as the hospital pursues its mission of providing excellent 

care to all people in the face of mounting financial challenges. People in the community recognize the importance 

of philanthropy, as evidenced by the results of this year’s Annual Fund Campaign. We are delighted to report that 

the campaign achieved a remarkable milestone in 2006 by surpassing the million-dollar mark for the first time in 

our history. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who gave so generously. Special thanks to the Development 

Committee of the board, especially Marla Byrnes, Delores Grenier and Bret Maffett. And, of course, we extend 

sincere appreciation to Vice President of Philanthropy Carol Garlick and her outstanding staff. Everyone involved 

can take pride in achieving this major milestone. 

The board would also like to salute the Hartford Hospital Medical Staff. We could not be the excellent 

hospital we are if we did not have physicians of such high caliber here, caring for patients, conducting research, 

educating the physicians and health care professionals of the future and helping to guide the hospital on its journey. 

The board looks forward to continuing to work closely with the administration, the medical staff and 

others in the community to shape the hospital of the future.

Report to the 

Community 

Educating physicians, nurses and other health care professionals is a critical part of Hartford Hospital’s 

mission. As an institution committed to promoting, restoring and maintaining the health of all the people in 

our community, we recognize that it is essential to prepare the next generation of professionals who will care 

for people in need. 

Our commitment to education doesn’t end when a doctor completes residency or a new nurse joins our 

staff or an allied health graduate earns certification. Continuous learning is one of our core values, and we actively 

encourage, support and in some cases require participation in ongoing educational activities. Being a community 

of learning helps ensure our continued excellence as a community of caring. 

Our emphasis on education is enhanced through collaboration with other hospitals and academic 

institutions. Our close working relationships with the University of Connecticut, St. Joseph College, Capital 

Community College, the University of Hartford, Manchester Community College and others are productive and 

enduring, ensuring the region of a continuing stream of highly educated medical professionals. 

In a different arena, leaders and policy-makers here in Connecticut and across the nation are recognizing 

that, along with increasing numbers of uninsured, access to quality health care is one of the major challenges 

facing our society today. Hartford Hospital understands this concern, and stands ready to engage in a public-policy 

debate regarding these pressing issues. We have had a long-standing commitment to caring for all segments of 

our community and are guided in these endeavors by a volunteer board of directors that directly represents that 

very community. 

We continue to lead the state in bringing new technology to the region. This year, we acquired next-generation 

cancer treatment technology in the form of the Trilogy Stereotactic System. We were the first hospital in the 

state to have Trilogy, which incorporates new image-guidance technology to provide ultra-precise tumor targeting. 

Our robotics program expanded this year, with additional departments making use of the da Vinci® Surgical System. 

Personnel changes in the course of the year included the appointment of Paul Thompson, MD, to head the 

Department of Cardiology. Arnold Rossi, MD, stepped down as director of Neurosurgery. We thank Dr. Rossi for his 

service, and we are grateful to William Druckemiller, MD, who stepped in to serve as acting director. Sharon Diamen, 

MD, continues to serve ably as acting director of the Department of Medicine while we conduct a national search to 

fill the position, even as she leads our highly regarded Palliative Medicine Consult Service. 

In closing, I extend sincere thanks to our board, medical staff, employees, volunteers, donors, corporators 

and the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary for dedicating their time, talent and expertise to making this the outstanding 

hospital it is.
