sale, then motored on to W arner to 

the John L utz herd w here P aul w anted 

to view the calves by one of his 

bulls previously sold to John. W arner 

is a nice little tow n w ith a good 

eating place so all of us took time to 

visit and lunch. W e w ere soon our 

w ay to the “ Hat,” w hich is about 

150 miles distant. Of course our Canadian 

friends talk about mileage in 

kilometers. W e set the odometer on 

kilometers so w e w ere sure that the

who was the first homesteader in

Mounties didn’ t get their road bait for 

the day. T his is rolling hills country 

w ith beautiful black soil along the w ay. 

Many crops are grow n throughout the 

area but w e did see bunches of cattle 

along our route. I n about tw o hours w e 

arrived in the “ Hat.” T he real name of 

the city is Medicine Hat, Alberta, a city 

that appears to have about 50,000 inhabitants. 

T his city is reputed to be the 

retirement city in Canada because of its 

low living costs. I t is a modern, beautiful, 

friendly city in the middle of the 

plains. 

I know , I sound like a tourist on a big 

trip through Alberta, but w e w ere really 

on business. W e w ere on our w ay 

to the 55th annual spring Medicine Hat 

Hereford ull sale. ifty-five years is a 

long time to keep a bull sale operating 

but they do it w ell at the “ Hat.” B oth 

horned and polled Herefords sold as 

did many Angus. T he show w as held 

at 7:00 the night before the sale. T he 

Angus showed first, then the Herefords. 

A large crow d w as on hand for both 

show s as several long time consignors 

w ere honored during the show . After the 

show a lunch w as offered to the people 

in attendance, and many other embellishments 

w ere also consumed. Many 

of the crow d stayed on and talked cattle 

until the late hour. I had been told this 

w as basically a range bull sale and be-

cause so many of the bulls looked herd

commercial people could and w ould 

buy them, and at w hat price. T he barn 

filled with people aout 10:00 the next 

morning, and ranchers started looking 

over the bulls. T his ex amination 

w ent on until the auctioneer called for 

people to get a seat as the auction w as 

ready to start. T he Angus bulls sold 

first in the sale, and sold well, to what 

I w as told w ere mostly commercial 

operators. T hen the Herefords hit the 

ring. L ike the big Calgary sale, T he 

Champion sells first, then the exhiitor 

can sell so many from his string, 

but at the “ Hat” the Champion and 

Reserve w inners can sell their w hole 

string and then it goes in to an order 

by the alphabet, only each year you 

move dow n one position in the sale 

order, in case you w ere last this year, 

you w ould start nex t year. T he Champion 

brought $ 6,500 and the bulls 

ranged from $ 3,500 to $ 9,500 w ith 

all commercial buyers. A w ell know n 

firm then came in the ring with set of 

big, strong polled bulls. T his sale had 

probably not seen many polled Herefords 

sell before, at this sale, so many 

of the crow d w ere anx ious to see how 

the commercial buyers w ould accept 

them. T hese w ere good bulls, w inning 

one division championship, and best 

three bulls and get of sire aw ard. T he 

ranchers ate them up, bidding from 

7,000 to 16,000 to own them. All 

but one w ent in the local area to graz -

ing associations. One buyer said, “ My 

budget only allow ed me $ 7,000 per 

bull and I did not get any of the ones I 

w anted! ” How ever, the top selling bull 

did go to a purebred herd in W yoming. 

I n some w ays this makes the purebred 

industry w ake up. Sure w e have 

seen some great sales in the U .S. this 

year and some high prices, but in my 

lifetime I have never seen the commercial 

industry go after the good bulls so 

briskly. Several Hereford breeders w ith 

new polled herd sires stated that nex t 

year at the “ Hat” they w ould be selling 

their polled ulls for the first time. ext 

year’ s sale w ill be an interesting event, 

in fact it w ill be one of the events to see 

in w estern Canada nex t year! 

I sure enjoyed our trip and the ex perience, 

and the opportunity to see many 

old friends and new friends. I w ould 

also like to see the herds w here these 

great young bulls reside. 

G ordon Stephenson, the G eneral 

Manager of the Canadian Hereford Association 

w as at this event and I had the 

opportunity to visit w ith G ordon for a 

couple of hours. 

T his is a man that I highly respect 

and he has done so much for the Canadian 

Hereford Association and Herefords 

throughout the w orld, as a w hole, 

and I am sure that all Hereford people 

throughout the planet respect and admire 

this man. G ordon w ill be retiring 

at the end of this year and all of us w ho 

knew him in the Hereford industry w ill 

feel the loss. Enjoy Mex ico and the 

ranch, G ordon, you have really earned 

the retirement! 

I have a new idea that I think all of 

us Hereford breeders should consider. I 

have talked to many breeders in the last 

couple of years about this issue. Many 

young people are in the Junior organiz 

ations, or in the last few years have 

finished their commitment in it, oth in 

Canada and in the “ states.” I w ould like 

to see one or tw o appointed by a committee 

of non-director people, to attend 

the meetings of the AHA, on a nonvoting 

basis. T hey w ould be allow ed 

to enter in the meeting discussions and 

give their view point on issues. 

Basis for ualification for nomination 

w ould be, (1.) A former Junior 

Hereford Association board member 

w ho is a relative of a current registered 

Hereford ranching operation or, (2.) A 

college graduate, a former Junior Hereford 

Association board member that is 

planning on being a Hereford breeder 

and has the financial capailities to accomplish 

the same. B asically people 

w ho plan to stay in the business w ould 

be our goal. W e are generally a bunch 

of gray hairs and the future rests w ith 

the young people coming on. Y ou say, 

“ W e have this in the Junior organiz a- 

tion” , but our retention w ith the Juniors 

is low after completion, w hen their 

term is up. L et’ s get the ones planning 

to stay in the business involved w ith 

the “ big boy meetings” and get their 

ideas upstairs. A great ex ample is our 

current president, Cliff Copeland. Cliff 

started w ith our Juniors and made his 

way to the top. oody in the AHA has 

told me how many juniors w e retain 

as breeders after they graduate from 

their board. L et’ s build a new Hereford 

stairs. W e are developing, but w e are 

not retaining these good young people. 

hat do you think about the basic 

idea? I w ould like to hear from anybody 

w ho cares about our Hereford future, 

young and mature, both need to 

answ er. I also w ould like to know how 

many former Junior Hereford Association 

members have been hired by the 

AHA? I know of several that w anted 

to be hired but the job w ent to someone 

not an HA alum. Huge amounts 

of money have gone into this program, 

w hy don’ t w e capitaliz e on it in some

and his dad V ernon started ex perimenting 

w ith crossbreeding as an option 

and also w orked to increase their cow 

herd numbers. T hey started by crossing 

Herefords w ith Angus and thought 

they had found a good solution for their 

market. How ever, curiosity got to them 

w hen the continental breeds became 

popular in the mid-to-late 1970s and 

they thought they should try utiliz ing 

the continentals as a cross w ith their 

Herefords. So the family altered their 

breeding program to include breeding 

their baldy commercial females w ith 

tw o different continental breeds. At

Just as the Stahly family has ex perimented 

with different reeds to finetune 

their operation, they also took the 

step to ex periment w ith the American 

Hereford Association’ s (AHA) N ational 

Reference Sire P rogram (N RSP ). 

T he N RSP is a program that allow s 

Hereford breeders to test young sires in 

real-w orld commercial settings. Operations 

like Stahly’ s utiliz e the semen of 

sires donated to the program to breed 

to their commercial herd and then the 

calves are fed out at a commercial feedyard. 

T he test herds like theirs maintain 

the breeding data, birth w eights, birth 

dates, and w eaning data. T he remaining 

data is collected at the feedyard 

w hen the calves go on test and carcass 

data is collected at the packing facility 

when the cattle are finished. 

I n the past tw o years, the test calves 

have been sent to Olsen Ranch Feedlot, 

Harrisburg, N E, also a participant in 

the program due to the implementation 

of a G row Safe system installed at the 

Olsen yard, to gather even more depth 

of data including feed efficiency data 

on the test calves. All data is then sent 

on to the AHA to be added to the N RSP 

sire’ s database.

type and promotion. I f you haven’ t 

lived through it, just looking back 

through generations of pictures in the 

old magaz ines tells you a story about 

changes in popular or preferred cattle 

types and styles of ads. For ex ample, 

it w as a big deal w hen they w ere able 

to print pictures and an even bigger 

accomplishment to print a picture in 

color. N ow it is commonplace. Along 

w ith that all of the online promotions 

such as videos, w ebsites, e-blasts, etc., 

are now commonplace. 

Assessments of q uality of an animal 

are still subjective to a certain point. 

e have more and more scientifc 

tools but our end-product is still beef. 

hen science and technology are able 

to easily meld w ith visual appraisal or 

completely take the place of it, our industry 

w ill change dramatically. I t w ill 

also take a lot of enjoyment out of it 

for those of us w ho enjoy raising cattle 

and visually appraising them. 

I look forw ard to traveling w ith a 

feeder in early April and I ’ ll pick his 

brain on some of this! 

T here are still more commercial producers 

than registered (or at least more 

cattle in the commercial sector) and I 

can’ t help but think if w e as registered 

breeders aren’ t raising w hat the commerical 

breeders w ant w e w ill feel the 

repurcussions especially if the feeders 

and ultimately packers aren’ t getting 

w hat they w ant in terms of a beef animal. 

T hat’ s only part of it. Marketing 

and perception also play a big role. I t’ s 

like w ho has the best burgers, McDonald’ 

s, B urger King, W endy’ s or Carl’ s. 

A lot of it is marketing and perception! 

(I still think Hereford beef tastes the 

best and I can tell a difference.) So I 

guess w e w ill see w here it goes w ith 

cattle marketing and future type changes. 

W hen science is perfected, many 

things w ill change. 

Marketing and perception play a 

huge role in popularity of breed as 

w ell. I still feel our breed has the best 

beef around. 

Once again, congratulations to the 

Colyer family on their record highselling 

bull! I ’ m sure w e w ill continue 

to hear and w itness great things about 

this bull, his siblings and progeny. 

Right before w e w ent to press w ith 

this issue w e learned of the passing 

of my aunt, Helen P aige. She w as my 

dad’ s oldest sister and only remaining 

sibling. She probably w ould not w ant 

me to divulge her age but I ’ m very 

proud to say she w as 99 years old. W hat 

a w onderful, beautiful w oman she w as. 

I can only imagine w hat her ex periences 

w ere in the early years w ith my 

grandparents on the ranch, starting out 

w ith Herefords in L avina, MT w here 

several family members homesteaded, 

moving on to Oregon, the B ig Hole 

country of Montana and Dillon, and 

finally to Twin Bridges. She and her 

sisters w ere tough high school basketball 

players back in the days of the 

half-court rules for w omen. She w ent 

on to college and eventually married 

B oynton “ Dub” P aige, a local star athlete 

and coach. T hey eventually settled 

in P hilipsburg, MT w here they made 

their home for many years. She w as a 

beautiful, elegant and smart w oman, 

great gardener, tough card player and 

one heck of a golfer! Amaz ingly, she 

w as alw ays interested in our business 

and Hereford

“ T he N RSP program has w orked

started retaining ow nership through the 

feedyard, so much of w hat w e had in 

place is q uite similar to how the reference 

sire program is designed.” 

T he Stahlys select three bulls from 

the reference sire listing of bulls in the 

AHA program and then breed 60 cow s 

to each bull. A step learned in the process 

w as that heat detection seemed 

to w ork better than heat synchroniz a- 

tion, but as Mike says, the ability to do 

that also goes out to having w ives and 

grandchildren w ho can help w ith the 

heat detecting. 

A family affair 

T he beef cattle business and supporting 

community organiz ations 

has alw ays been a top priority for 

Mike and Judy. Mike has served as 

president of the Central Cattlemen’ s 

organiz ation and the South Dakota 

Cattlemen’ s Association. He served 

on the South Dakota B eef I ndustry 

Council for tw elve years, nine 

years as a federation director for the 

N ational Cattlemen’ s B eef Association 

and three years on the N ational 

Cattlemen’ s B eef B oard. Mike w as 

an active director and president of the 

South Dakota Hereford Association. 

Overall, the family believes the biggest 

enefit to their participation in the 

N RSP program is that they get to keep 

the heifers to put back in their herd 

and they have data on the herdmates 

of these females. “ I t has also improved 

our herd because w e don’ t have to buy 

as many bulls,” Doug says. Sometimes 

you can get so much data that it is confusing 

but for the most part w e use it 

to pick out w hat w e don’ t w ant and try 

to keep improving the bottom-line, ex - 

plained Mike. 

T hrough the N RSP , the family has 

tested tw o to three new sires each year 

resulting in about 80 to 100 calves. 

Over the years they’ ve reported data 

on 1,187 calves representing 45 sires.

So in addition to focusing on developing a solid cow herd, Mike has 

taken the time to be a leader in the beef industry. Along w ith raising 

the family and spending time w ith their grandchildren, Judy serves a 

special role as “ main heat detector” during A.I . season and w orks parttime 

as a bookkeeper at a local seed company. Judy is also devoted 

many years as a community 4-H leader. 

Mike and Judy have tw o children, a daughter B ecky and a son Doug. 

Doug and his family live right nex t door on the ranch so are involved 

in the day to day operation. Doug’ s w ife Chris teaches high school 

English and Spanish at Huron high school and has been honored as 

teacher of the year in the past. B oth Doug and Chris are 4-H leaders 

and Doug has served as president of the County 4-H L eaders and also 

the County Ex tension B oard. T heir oldest son Spencer is a freshman 

at SDSU and is q uite a basketball player w inning the honor of being 

selected on the second team ESD Conference as w ell as selected to play 

in the All Star B asketball G ame. Son, Mason is a sophomore in high 

school, also plays basketball, serves on student Senate and w as chosen 

to go to All State Chorus tw ice. He has a special interest in breaking 

colts, w hich is important around the Stahly Ranch especially since all 

the cattle work is done on horseack. oungest son olan is ust five 

but eager to ride horses and soon get involved in show ing 4-H calves 

like his older brothers. 

Daughter, B ecky w as also involved in the ranch during high school 

and college, assisting Judy as the main heat detector. She has since 

married Dave B rooker and they farm near T ulare, SD. T hey have tw o 

boys W yatt, a 5 th grader and Andy a 3 rd grader. Show ing 4-H calves has 

extended to this family as well. The summers are also filled following 

Dave on the stock car racing circuit in central South Dakota and B ecky 

serves as local Sunday School superintendent. 

T he Stahly’ s have been fortunate to also have a consistent source 

for their bulls especially w hen they are in need of a new Angus herd 

bull. Judy w as raised in a w ell-know n South Dakota Angus family. Her 

father w as L ow ell and mother, Myrtle Styles, Styles P lainview Angus 

Ranch, B rentford, SD. So w hen spring arrives and it’ s time to restock 

their Angus bull battery, Mike and Judy annually attend her family’ s 

annual bull sale, w hich is currently operated by Judy’ s brother B ob 

and his son Chris Styles. As they seek genetics w hether it be Angus or 

Hereford they buy from breeders w ith integrity and select bulls w ith 

w ell-rounded EP Ds, added volume and length and a good q uiet disposition. 

“ W e feel disposition is very important and highly heritable,” 

Mike said. P revious Hereford bulls have been bought from South 

Dakota breeders: K&B Herefords; B ischoffs, Faw cetts and Rausches. 

As they look to the future, Mike and Judy say, “ you never know how 

things w ill w ork out but w e do hope that one or tw o of our grandsons 

w ill w ant to join the operation someday.” 

God Made a Farmer — 2

During the 2013 Super Bowl was the first time that had heard od ade a 

Farmer” read by P aul Harvey and I found it to be more than just something that 

I could relate to; it w as something 

that I have lived by for much of 

my life. T o hear it w as emotional 

for me as it w as for most of you, 

I ’ m sure. I w rite this w ith my son 

Hollis (about to be 3) sitting by 

my side on an evening during 

the beginning of February. Our 

bull sale, my daughter’ s 1st 

birthday and my son’ s 3rd are 

all coming on fast not to mention 

calving season has slow ly 

started. I ’ m sure my friend Dave G oertz w ill 

understand w hy I didn’ t answ er his call just now as I am 

trying to w rite something that most all of you cow men and w omen w ill 

recogniz e even better than a farmer. 

For as long as I can remember I ’ ve been enthused 

by livestock and being a part of w hat it takes to 

raise them. To start spent my first summers in a 

hay field with my cousin for what seemed to e 

months at a time and yes, it got old but the time 

sitting in the mow er tractor in my early teens 

from the time the dew lifted until it set back in 

was never wasted. During the first few summers 

w e had our fun, of course, and probably 

did as much messing around as w e did cutting 

hay, but w e got the hay cut and the older w e 

got the more w e accomplished. 

B y my mid-teens I spent time in the tractor practicing 

my reasons for judging contests. I w as able to make up classes 

in my mind and talk about them like the class w as real and right in front of me. 

I ’ m sure a few more sections had to 

be replaced from hitting rocks due to 

my distraction from the task at hand 

but it helped to pass the time.

many miserable bliz z ards in central 

South Dakota during calving season 

and reaped the utmost enefits 

in doing so. The enefits/rewards 

that I speak of are not the best prices 

that my grandfather, father or I have 

seen, it’ s the ex tremes that w e have 

lived through; the ex periences that 

w e have had that make us stronger 

and keep us going. I t’ s the snow - 

storm, w hen I w as too young to be 

outside during the action, that left us 

blessed w ith 50+ bottle calves my 

family was happy to have left, after filling a hole with those youngsters that 

w eren’ t lucky enough to be found until the snow melted.

he accomplished what he did at the meetings except maye we didnt let him 

know or didnt have time to let him know what we were dealing with at home. 

had a Bronco full of calves (8-10) that were wet and cold that would unload 

at the arn. ou might e thinking why didnt you take the cows in when they 

started showing signs of calving e did take the first ten in ut when the 

weather changed we ust couldnt keep up. hen came across one that was 

real ad would make that mad dash to the hot ox and get the calf drenched 

with warm colostrum as soon as could. e all know the feeling when you 

dont find one in time and the cold has already gotten to the neworn, ut worse 


than that is the feeling of having one of those chilled neworns die as you 

try to work him ack to life. The sorrow is immense ut gets put on the ack 

urner as you know that there are more waiting for your help. ou have to 

keep going and it doesnt matter how long youve een at it. There are only 

500 in the calving pasture and not more than 50 can e orn that day thanks 

to synchroniation so if it means saving 50 you save those 50 and the 50 that 

were orn the day efore. The slow freeing rain went on for two days 

Then the process of trying to pair these aies ack with their mothers started.

Williams Herd Sells to Fortune 

Announcing the Complete Dispersal of the L ate G ail W illiams Registered 

Hereford Herd. Dr. G ail W illiams w as a research scientist for Ely L illy & 

Co. for most of his w orking career. G ail’ s life dream w as to return to South 

Dakota and the W illiams family Hereford ranch. T hat dream w as achieved in 

2006 w hen he retired and G ail and w ife Debbie moved back to P resho, SD. 

G ail then embarked on a venture to put together a herd of registered females 

that ex celled in EP Ds and q uality. T he untimely passing of G ail W illiams in 

October 2012 dictated the sale of all the cattle on the ranch. 

T he commercial cow herd and feeder cattle sold at a local auction market 

in October. T he registered Hereford herd liq uidation w as turned over to 

Art Handel, Handel Marketing, Rapid City, SD. T he entire registered herd, 

consisting of all bred females, open cow s, 2012 bulls and heifers and some 

2011 born bulls retained for sale along w ith three herd sires totaled 173 head 

were sold to ortune Cattle Co. C, Rockham, SD. Rod ortune and De 

Ollerich have taken this elite herd on and plan to continue in the registered 

Hereford business. T hey intend to follow the ideas and goals of G ail W illiams

age 69, of Meadow , SD, w ere held at 

2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at 

the Calvary L utheran Church in L emmon, 

SD. 

V ivan W att L yon w as born to N .F. 

(Red) and Margaret (T idball) L yon 

on April 11, 1943, at Dupree, SD. He 

w as raised on the family ranch in the 

Coal Springs Community. He attended 

all eight grades in a nearby country 

school. V ivan graduated from L emmon 

High School w ith the class of 1961. 

On Jan. 16, 1961, he joined the 211th 

Engineering Co. of L emmon, SD, and 

w as honorably discharged Jan. 15, 

1965. He w as called to active duty on

On June 20, 1964, V ivan and B arbara 

W elter w ere married at Faith, SD, 

and started their married life on a ranch 

northw est of T hunder B utte w orking 

for his father. T hree children w ere born 

to this union: Cary in 1965, T w yla in 

1967 and T racy in 1968. 

On June 1, 1969, the family leased 

and moved to the former L .J. Seim 

ranch on the South G rand River, south 

of L emmon. T hey later purchased the 

ranch and there V ivan raised Hereford 

cattle and enjoyed many years of 

ranching. 

Health reasons forced the sale of 

the cow s in March of 2012. On March 

23, 2012, he w as diagnosed w ith AL S 

at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN . On 

July 30, 2012, he entered Five Counties
