Sound quality plays an important role in the experience, whether it’s radio, a movie or the latest album from
your favorite artist. To <strong>DLS</strong>, sound always comes first. With design a close second. And seeing how well
designed our speakers are, you can easily imagine their perfect sound quality.
Choose your speakers carefully. Look and listen. After that, it’s ok to let your heart influence your decision.
W e l c o m e t o a s o u n d e x p e r i e n c e .
It might seem strange that you’re going
to read about how our speakers sound.
Especially since it says “real speakers speak
for themselves” on the cover of this brochure.
Which is absolutely true. Only our
speakers can tell you what they sound like.
But we’d like to try to give you a sample,
and some guidance about selecting your next
speakers.
Pleasant reading!
Who hears what, and what should you
choose?
It’s fairly easy to tell the difference between a <strong>DLS</strong> speaker and one
of lesser quality. Although it’s not as easy to get the opportunity
to actually compare them. And if you don't compare your present
speaker system with one of ours, you'll never know how satisfied
you could be.
Our philosophy is: All components of the speaker should
work in unison. Exactly at the same time. That’s what creates a
well-balanced sound. Reproduced precisely as it was intended
by the moviemaker or musician. Of course there are a great number
of factors that our sound designers wrestle with, and as we’ve
already mentioned, this brochure can’t contain everything. But if
you want proof, we suggest you take a stroll down to your favorite
hi-fi dealer and listen. And listen some more.
Placing furniture around your sound system,
or the other way around?
Nowadays, speakers are so much more than just providers of
good sound. They're supposed to fit into your carefully decorated
home. Who wants to move the sofa for better sound performance?
You won’t have to when you choose <strong>DLS</strong> speakers.
There are obviously things which affect the sound – for instance
speakers in corners will produce more bass – but that won’t
decide whether you’ll get the exclusive <strong>DLS</strong> sound or not. Look
at our subwoofer T-sub8, for example. It’s specially designed to
fit in corners, but it has qualities that let you place it wherever
you want.
04
Multi-channel audio.
But what about all of these new sound formats that keep appearing?
Like DTS, Dolby Digital, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and so on. Do they
affect which speakers you should buy? Not really. Most of these
are dependent on other equipment, such as your DVD-player and
amplifier. Mainly, it’s about getting the maximum surround sound
effect possible, especially in home cinema systems. The difference
between 5.1 and 6.1 for example, is basically the number
of speakers you place around your room to get an even richer
sound experience.
What you need to think of is if the series you are interested
in contains a wide range of speakers. As for example the <strong>DLS</strong>
T3-series with five different models, letting you place speakers
if you’re in doubt.
And what about cables? There are those who claim better
cables are a hoax. With scientific certainty, we can prove the opposite.
You’ll hear the difference! It’s simple: There’s an electric
current in most cables (except optical ones). And you want that
current to reach your speakers unimpeded. However, all other
cables and any other electric equipment close to your hi-fi system,
such as your TV, have magnetic fields that radiate interference
that affects unshielded cables. In addition, the signal carried
by the electric current can be distorted by the cable through
which it runs; a thick cable lets more electricity through than a
thin one. And as we concluded earlier, you want the current to
wherever you want – in sizes of your choice. And if you want to
start off with a moderate home cinema system, you’ll be able to
expand it at your own pace.
The importance of amplifiers and cables.
It can be hard enough to choose the right hi-fi equipment, even
though we dare say it’s the speakers that make the difference.
There is, however, one thing that most experts agree on, and
that’s powerful amplifiers. Simply put, you’ll need some extra
punch from time to time. Within reason, you’d be hard put to get
too much power out of an amplifier. And remember it’s as much
about amperage as it’s about watts. Be sure to ask your hi-fi dealer
05
flow without resistance. A top quality cable is
definitely an inexpensive investment in a better
listening experience.
sound, but you won’t have speakers all over
your home. It is, on the other hand, completely
up to you to choose visible speakers
if that’s what you prefer.
Multi-room.
A relatively new hi-fi concept is multi-room.
Rather descriptive since it involves sound in
more than one room. What’s less obvious is that
it also involves different audio in different rooms.
When you’re watching a DVD in your living room,
someone else should be able to listen to the
radio in your kitchen. But you should only need
one hi-fi system. And you should be able to
control it from every room. This demands
an amplifier with special functionality of
course, but also a little extra from your
speakers. Particularly design-wise.
The <strong>DLS</strong> In-wall series is an excellent
choice if you want speakers with impressive
performance and little or
no aesthetic impact. Most
Don’t turn off your stereo system
to relax. Turn it on.
Music should be exactly as you expect
from your favorite artist. And that’s only
possible when every part of your speaker
system works simultaneously. Fact is
that even a microsecond out of sync
can cause annoyance in a very short
time. And it won’t be long before
you’ll turn the music off. We
want the opposite. When you
come home tired after a day’s
work, you should want to listen
to your speakers. And keep on
listening.
of the speaker is hidden
inside your wall with only
the front left visible. You
get the ear-pleasing <strong>DLS</strong>
T 3 - S E R I E S
The latest addition to the <strong>DLS</strong> loudspeaker family is the T3-series. Created for those who love both music
and movies. Their slim shape and modern design fits them nicely in almost any living room. Preferably
beside a nice, flat, wall TV. All of the speakers in the T3-series come in either silver or black, and there
are optional grilles in various colors.
The T3-series is a flexible system with fully integrated sound characteristics, allowing you to choose
exactly the speaker size to suit you. It won’t matter if you have the latest 7.1 home cinema or simply
your favorite listening armchair set aside in the corner for lazy afternoons with your record collection for
company.
The slender, skyscraper shape of the T3
will catch your eye. And its transparent,
dynamic, wide range of sound will catch
your ear. Since it’s a full range speaker, it
performs fabulously by itself, or produces
a very well- balanced listening experience
combined with a <strong>DLS</strong> subwoofer. The
crossover from T3 to subwoofer is unusually
harmonious.
09
T S 3 T M 3
TS3 has the same bright, open sound as the T3, despite
being noticeably smaller. This makes TS3 something of
a proof of your being able to put together your own T3-
series home cinema system any way you like. In other
words, if you’d rather have smaller, more inconspicuous
speakers, the TS3 is an excellent speaker by itself or in
combination with a <strong>DLS</strong> subwoofer.
Since the demand for small speakers – with big sound
– just keeps on increasing, we’ve designed the TM3 to
be as small as possible. But it’s still a very powerful
contender. Nonetheless, we recommend that you partner
your TM3s with one of our subwoofers to obtain a truly
full range of sound.
T C 3
T 3 L C R
10
TC3 is perhaps the most important speaker in your home
cinema system. Most of the dialog track of the movie is
reproduced through it, and human voices need a natural
sound image for clarity and credibility. The center speaker
also needs to match the rest of the speakers perfectly
to create a well-timed, controlled sound experience. To
ensure this, the TC3 and the rest of the T3-series are
based on a common design philosophy and use identical
components.
The T3 LCR is one speaker instead of three, integrating
a center and front speakers. Instead of mounting five
speakers on your walls (one center, two fronts and two
surrounds) you only need three. Naturally, the T3 LCR
produces the same crystal clear sound as the rest of the
T3-series. A very smart design feature is the length of
the T3 LCR. Slightly shorter than a 42” Plasma screen,
we’ve thought about how it will look above or below your
big screen.
R - S E R I E s
The unseen is the magic of the R-series. Even though we think the speakers are extraordinarily good-looking,
it’s the inside that counts: Innovative internal acoustics for better speed and timing, super-stable
cabinets with powerful inner bracing, carefully designed drivers, and unique crossover configuration.
There are very few compromises in the pursuit of beautifully balanced sound.
Listening to the R50, you’ll be surprised by
how it can create a large and wide soundstage
being as small as it is. This is due
of course to the fact that we have devoted
the same amount of time and effort to this
small speaker as any large one. Using
components of matching quality, we can
guarantee a sound of matching quality.
Nothing has been left to chance!
The sound of the R55 is timed and tuned
The low bass can be what turns music or movies into a true-to-life experience. We know that from our
experience in car audio design, where the bass is particularly hard to manage.
Our active subwoofers have built-in amplifiers with large power reserves and are designed for speed
and control. Easing them through the toughest bass lines and low-frequency special effects. If you’re
looking for outstanding bass reproduction, we recommend you try using two <strong>DLS</strong> subwoofers, placed
asymmetrically to level out any bass resonance.
Placed in a corner – for which it is designed – the T-sub8
will almost seem to disappear. But it is an all-round subwoofer
that performs just as well standing freely beside
a wall. Where it will also add a design feature to your
room, rather than just take up space. If you really want
perfect bass performance, you should try this: Place the
subwoofer where you normally sit. Then listen closely to
the floor all around your room. The spot where you find
the best sound is where you should position your subwoofer!
Using the variable volume level and low-pass
your T-sub8 into any speaker system.
If you’re building a new house, or perhaps redesigning your apartment or summer house, <strong>DLS</strong> should be
your only choice for advanced in-wall or in-ceiling audio. <strong>DLS</strong> In-wall speakers are constructed from the
same high-class components as used in our car hi-fi speakers. They are easy to install and you’ll get excellent
<strong>DLS</strong> sound wherever you want. Install a pair on each side of your 42” plasma screen, or as satellites
behind you. Or let them provide a pleasant sound background in your kitchen or bathroom. You won’t be
disappointed!
<strong>DLS</strong> In-wall speakers can also be used for sound in public places, such as in a supermarket or your office.
The standard color of the grilles is white, but you can easily remove and spray them with any color to
match your interiors.
The IW 426 is mainly designed for roof installation.
Because of its large signal capability, it can perform
outstandingly well, despite its small size. And the silk
dome tweeter spreads the sound excellently throughout
your room.
Since its depth is only 70 mm, it can be installed
almost anywhere.
The main difference between the IW426 and IW428 is
size. The sound has the same crisp quality, but the 428
has a slightly wider range because of its larger bass.
<strong>DLS</strong> In-wall speakers are also weatherproof, meaning
you can install them on your patio or your boat.
I W 6 . 2 I W 8 . 2
Round or square speakers should be your choice. The
square IW6.2 is normally installed in a wall, but since its
depth is only 80 mm, you can put it in any other suitable
place. The IW6.2 is a 2-way component speaker with
the tweeter separated from the bass/mid-range to provide
the best possible sound. We strongly recommend
the square In-wall speakers if you’re using them in your
home cinema system.
Since the IW8.2 is larger, it offers more bass than the
IW6.2. Besides that, the sound quality is the same.
Since front speakers often need a little bit more punch
and need to perform well at higher volumes, we suggest
choosing the larger IW8.2 as front speakers in your
home cinema system and the smaller IW6.2 as satellites
behind you.
<strong>DLS</strong> accessories are meant to simplify and improve your sound experience. That’s why we’ve been
particularly careful about their design and functionality. For example, it’s important that cables have
qualities that ensure the best possible sound. Remember what we said on page 5 about how a better
cable is less affected by its surroundings, reduces resistance and inductance and therefore transports
the audio signal better? This also applies to connectors. And it is more important than most hi-fi buyers
know. But it’s also important to have flexible cables to make installation easy, and angled connectors for
when you’re short of space behind your amplifier.
Besides that, we’re also rather proud of the color range of grilles made for the T3-series.
<strong>DLS</strong> is continuously raising the performance stakes in car audio. Since 1979, we’ve won more awards
and been named test winner more times than we can count. Now we’ve moved all of our technical
expertise and the <strong>DLS</strong> sound into the living room, giving everybody the chance to experience it. We are
also proud to announce that Sweden’s top audio designer has joined our team and quite a few audiophiles
have taken notice. Our speakers have received a lot of acclaim in both Swedish and international
hi-fi and home cinema magazines.
