Introduction
Horticulture and gardening have always been important activities for the John Innes
Centre both scientifically and recreationally. The Institute was founded in 1910 under the
name John Innes Horticultural Institute with the joint purpose of being a horticultural
training institute and a scientific research institute. Early work in the Institute was
focussed on fruit breeding and plant genetics. Work was carried out on apples and
cherries amongst other fruits and also with other flowering plants such as tulips. The early
work of the Institute has made a lasting contribution to the world of gardening through
the development of a variety of different plants and also the world famous John Innes
Composts.
The library and archive collections reflect the importance of horticulture and gardening in
the early life of the John Innes Centre with a wide spread of resources in both the Modern
Science Library and the John Innes Foundation Historical Collections. In recognition of this
the Library, Information and Archives service have taken the opportunity to create a selfcontained
‘Gardening Library’ within the Main Science Library. This collection has brought
together the gardening books and extensive runs of gardening periodicals that were
previously dispersed throughout the library and with the addition of a number of modern
books we hope that the collection will be of use to gardeners of all levels and types within
the John Innes Centre.
This catalogue lists all of of the material that can be found within the gardening library
and gives details of selected resources from the John Innes Foundation Rare Books
Collection that are likely to be of interest to gardeners. The gardening library can be
found on the 1 st floor of the library in the 6 th bay of shelves and is now fully operational.
RESOURCES AVAILABLE WITHIN THE JOHN INNES FOUNDATION HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS
The John Innes Foundation Historical Collections contain many resources that are of interest to gardeners of
all types and levels. What follows is an edited selection of records from the catalogue of the Rare Books
Collection prepared by Elizabeth Stratton in July 2002. As well as the material highlighted below there are
many local, national and international flora’s within the collection that highlight the plants that can be found
in a given locality. Some of the herbals that are contained within the collection will also be of interest to
gardeners as they contain details not only of the medicinal uses of the plants but also a brief description of
how to grow the plant and in most cases an illustration of the plant for identification purposes. These books
are not available to be borrowed by members of staff but they are available for reference use and if you
wish to make use of them please see a member of library staff. A full catalogue of the books within the Rare
Books Collection is available from the library and visits to the collection can be arranged through the library
staff.
