Introduction 

Alec has kindly asked me to write the editorial for this 

issue, the last that I will co-edit with him. I retire from 

Kew in March after 32 years in post, a milestone for 

me. My tenure at Kew has flown by, and I can honestly 

say that I have enjoyed it immensely. It has taken me 

around the world, hunting orchids in places as varied as 

New Guinea, Madagascar, China, and Peru. I have met 

some extraordinary people, starting with Eric Holttum 

who took me under his wing in 1974 when I was green 

behind the ears, and including most of the world’s wellknown 

orchid botanists and growers. Highlights have 

included seeing such remarkable slipper orchids as 

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, P. armeniacum, and 

Cypripedium lentiginosum in their native habitats, 

plant-hunting followed by swimming on the coral reefs 

of the Solomon Islands, hunting bee orchids on Crete, 

and wandering along the avenue of Adansonia 

grandidieri in Madagascar. I feel at times that it has 

been a charmed life and a thoroughly stimulating one. 

I have just returned from a particularly 

enjoyable conference in Ecuador that attracted most of 

the leading Andean orchid specialists. The meeting 

was packed, and it is always gratifying to see so many 

students presenting papers. On a pre-conference tour to 

north-west Ecuador, I saw Selenipedium aequinoctale 

in its type locality and, on a post-conference tour, I had 

the privilege of inspecting at close quarters 

Phragmipedium kovachii in its home in northern Peru. 

The only plant we could get close to had a magnificent 

royal purple flower larger than any reported in 

cultivation. The experience was enhanced by sightings 

of cock-of-the-rock and golden-headed quetzals. 

Wherever I have been in recent years, whether it 

is Borneo, Madagascar or Peru, I have been struck by 

the loss of habitats that even 20 years ago were in 

pristine shape. Habitat conservation seems to me to be 

the pressing issue for us all. Without their habitats, 

orchids cannot survive in the longer term. Initiatives 

such as those of Orchid Conservation International and 

the San Diego Orchid Society's 1% for Orchid 

Conservation trust show that people care, but we need 

to involve more people and try to give local people 

living in orchid-rich areas reasons to preserve the 

forests around them. In the case of P. kovachii, the 

valley where it grows is still prime habitat and would 

make a superb nature reserve. We were pleasantly 

surprised to find it surviving on the original cliff where 

it was discovered in 2001. We found seedlings of the 

orchid there, one about to flower. If left, it would 

certainly thrill future eco-tourists who might brave the 

deep mud and thunderstorms and pay good money to 

the local guides and landowners to see it. 

On my retirement, I do not intend to stop 

research on orchids. I still have contributions to make 

to the final two volumes of Genera Orchidacearum, the 

Flora of China Orchidaceae, and much else. I will still 

be contactable at Kew, although not on a daily basis 

(my wife informs me!). 

I would like to finish by thanking readers for 

their support for ORN over the years and to thank my 

co-editor who has compiled ORN for the past several 

years. I hope to see ORN continue as a source of 

information on orchid science, one of many that can 

now be accessed over the internet. Good orchid

Blanco, Mario (Department of Botany, University of 

Florida, 220 Bartram Hall, Gainesville, FL 32611-8526, 

U.S.A.; mblanco@flmnh.ufl.edu) is working on a 

monograph of the Neotropical genus Lockhartia 

(Oncidiinae) toward his Ph.D., under the direction of 

Norris Williams (Florida Museum of Natural History). 

This includes a formal taxonomic treatment, species 

circumscriptions, morphological and anatomical 

studies, and phylogenetic analyses using morphological 

and molecular data. He is willing to identify both 

herbarium and cultivated material. 

Kurzweil, Hubert (new address: Singapore Botanic 

Gardens, 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569; 

Hubert_KURZWEIL@nparks.gov.sg) has recently 

completed morphological and taxonomic work on the 

genus Disperis while based at the Compton Herbarium, 

Cape Town, South Africa. A revision of the Asian taxa 

of this genus was already published (Blumea 50: 143- 

152; a shortened and popular version also in Malayan 

Orchid Review 38: 78-79, 82-83), and a synopsis of the 

entire genus with J. Manning as co-author will be 

published in Adansonia in early 2006. Hubert is also 

contributing material and information to a molecular 

study of Disperis by Kim Steiner (California). For this 

work they would appreciate receiving any material of 

tropical Disperis species (dried in silica-gel) with 

proper CITES documentation. Contact Hubert at his 

new address above for more details. 

For various reasons Hubert decided to accept a 

position in the Singapore Botanic Gardens in December

2005, where he will undertake taxonomic studies in the 

genus Calanthe in collaboration with Phillip Cribb and 

Dudley Clayton.

Obituaries 

Arthur George Alphonso (1921-2005) 

George Alphonso trained as a gardener at the Singapore 

Botanic Gardens during the Directorship of Professor 

Eric Holttum. After the war, in which he continued to 

work in the garden, he came to Kew in 1954 on the 

two-year, international trainee course. During his two 

years at Kew he developed a love of the gardens and 

made many lasting friends. 

On his return to Singapore, he resumed work 

at the Gardens as Senior Curator and, not long after the 

retirement of Professor Humphrey Burkhill as Director 

in 1969, was appointed Acting Director, a post that he 

held until 1976. He developed the orchid hybridization 

programme in the gardens and also introduced many 

novelties. Following his retirement he continued to 

take an interest in the Gardens but developed a new 

career as a garden designer, travelling as far afield as 

Australia and the Philippines, there to advise President 

and Mrs Marcos. He continued to work with orchids 

and was a regular lecturer at World Orchid Conferences 

and other events until the 1990s. He settled eventually 

in Perth, Australia, where his daughters are resident, 

but made frequent forays back to Singapore where he 

remained active in the Orchid Society of South-East 

Asia for many years. The hybrid orchid genus 

Alphonsara is named in his honour. 

George passed away on 27 July 2005 in Perth. 

He leaves behind four daughters and their families, his 

wife Margaret having predeceased him. 

Phillip Cribb 

James (Jim) B. Comber (1929-2005) 

Jim Comber, one of the world’s leading authorities on 

Asian orchids and especially those of Indonesia, died 

suddenly of unknown causes on 7 September 2005. 

Jim was born in Scotland in 1929 into a famous 

horticultural family, the eldest son of Harold Comber, 

the well-known plant collector, and grandson of James 

Comber, head gardener for the Messel family at 

Nymans in Sussex. He worked at Sutton & Son of 

Reading before coming to Kew as a trainee in April 

1951. His training at Kew was interrupted by National 

Service, during which time he was sent to Singapore 

where his love of south-east Asia and its flora was 

nourished. He returned to Kew and completed his 

course in 1955, overlapping as a student with George 

Alphonso, later Director of the Singapore Botanic 

Garden and a life-long friend. George sadly 

predeceased Jim by a month. In 1955 Jim was given 

leave by Kew to spent time in Java with Anglo- 

Indonesian Plantations. 

Following graduation, he took up a post with 

Anglo-Indonesian Plantations at Sapang, near Tenom in 

Sabah (then British North Borneo). He remained at 

Sapang through Malaysia independence celebrations 

but his close association with the plantation workers, 

many of whom came from Indonesian Kalimantan, 

aroused the suspicions of the authorities and Jim left 

Sabah in 1971, moving to a similar posting near Medan 

in north Sumatra. After three years there, he was 

appointed to a post in Java working for Ciba-Geigy, the 

Swiss agro-chemical business. Initially he was based in 

Jakarta, close to Bogor with its famous botanic garden 

(Kebun Raya) and herbarium (Herbarium Bogoriense). 

On his frequent visits to examine herbarium material 

and to use its library, he made many friends amongst 

the staff of both institutes, starting and running the 

Sunday Orchid Club, mainly comprising members of 

the Herbarium and Gardens staff who joined him on 

orchid forays on the volcanoes in West Java. From 

Bogor he was transferred to Surabaya and set up home 

in Tretes on the slopes of Gunong Arjuno. He hosted 

many friends, including visiting botanists, at his home 

in Tretes. His orchid forays continued in East and 

Central Java, thereby developing a deep first-hand 

knowledge of the country’s rich orchid flora of almost 

700 species. Initially, Jim photographed the orchids 

that he saw and built up a superb and comprehensive 

collection of images of South-east Asian orchids. His 

first book, Wayside Orchids of South-east Asia was 

published by Heinemann-Asia, Kuala Lumpur, in 1981. 

At about the same time, after becoming frustrated at the 

difficulty of naming the orchids that he had 

photographed, he began to press specimens so that 

specialists could provide accurate identifications for 

him. This proved to be an inspired decision because he 

built up an extensive herbarium that he was able to 

consult in his retirement while researching his books on 

Indonesian orchids. 

Jim was transferred by Ciba-Geigy to run their 

Thai operation in 1984 and continued to document the 

Javanese and Thai orchid flora in his spare time. In his 

spare time, he prepared his authoritative and wellillustrated 

book, Orchids of Java, published in 1990 by 

the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Jim generously 

funded and oversaw its production. He retired in 1991, 

shortly after his marriage to Liam, to the UK, settling in 

Southampton. He was appointed one of Kew’s first 

Honorary Research Associates on his retirement and 

was a regular visitor to Kew for the next 12 years. 

During that time he completed his monumental Orchids 

of Sumatra (2001), the first illustrated account of the 

rich orchid flora of the island. It was also published by 

Kew in collaboration with Natural History Publications, 

Kota Kinabalu. The size of this task can be judged by 

the fact that the flora numbers some 1500 species, as 

many plants as are found in the whole of the British 

Isles.

Jim was immensely generous with his 

photographs, lending them to many botanists, authors 

and editors who were unable to obtain images of many 

rare species themselves. I think it is true to say that Jim 

was the only person to have photographed some of the 

rarer south-east Asian species and certainly the only 

person to have photographed many of them in the wild. 

His photographs and articles have graced the pages of 

many orchid journals over the years, including the 

Orchid Review, Orchid Digest, Orchids and the 

American Orchid Society Bulletin, and the Malayan 

Orchid Review. He discovered many new species in his 

travels, one of which, Sarcoglyphis comberi J.J.Wood, 

is named in his honour. 

Jim leaves his wife Liam and children Michael 

and Sarah. His sister, Mary Comber-Miles, has 

documented Jim’s and his father’s plant-hunting travels 

and hopes to publish the account in the near future.

First Scientific Conference on Andean 

Orchids A Success 

The First Scientific Conference on Andean Orchids, 

held 11-13 November 2005 in Gualaceo, Ecuador, was 

a tremendous success according to all 24 speakers and 

approximately 150 registrants from all continents 

except Africa and Antarctica (regrettably but perhaps 

understandably, no penguins signed up). One tired 

registrant from Indonesia held the unenviable honor of 

having the longest journey and probably the world's 

worst travel agent; it took him 60 hours to travel from 

Jakarta to Gualaceo! 

Organized by José 'Pepe' Portilla and Alec 

Pridgeon with superb logistical help from Becky Unruh 

and the entire Ecuagenera family, the first Conference 

was a milestone in our current knowledge of thousands 

of orchid species in the Andes. In this vast laboratory 

of evolution, spanning some 5500 miles from 

Venezuela to Chile, the rich floristic diversity is a study 

in rapid speciation and adaptive radiation. Species 

richness of Orchidaceae in particular reaches its zenith 

here, greater than probably anywhere else on earth. 

Hundreds of new species have been described in recent 

years, particularly in Pleurothallidinae thanks to the 

indefatigable Carlyle Luer. Therein lies the primary 

reason for commencing a series of conferences on 

Andean orchids: to convene experts to document and 

try to explain such extraordinary species richness as 

well as to gather data that can be used for its protection 

and preservation in the face of worldwide habitat 

destruction and climatic changes. Yet another reason is 

to help train students from all the Americas in 

theoretical and applied techniques and share current 

knowledge about orchid biology so that they can train 

others in their own countries. 

Speakers from the United States included Ken 

Cameron (NYBG) and his former Ph.D. student Aída 

Alvarez (Herbario Nacional del Ecuador), Franco 

Pupulin and Robert L. Dressler (Lankester Gardens, 

Costa Rica), Stig Dalström (Marie Selby Botanical 

Gardens), Mark Whitten, Norris Williams and four of 

his Ph.D. students from the Florida Museum of Natural 

History at the University of Florida, and Daniel Fulop 

from Harvard University. Günter Gerlach came from 

Germany to speak on pollination biology and 

phylogeny of Stanhopeinae. Juan Felipe Posada of 

Colomborquideas in Medellín gave a visually stunning 

presentation on orchid species in Colombia, and 

Alfredo Manrique from Peru left nothing out in 

discussing the ecology, hybridization, and cultivation of 

Phragmipedium kovachii. Besides Aída Alvarez, the 

speakers from Ecuador included Alex Hirtz, Lou Jost, 

Lorena Endara (Herbario QCA and a student of Norris 

Williams), and Pepe Portilla, Gilberto Merino, and 

Carlos Vásquez from Ecuagenera. Henry Oakeley flew 

in from United Kingdom to speak on Lycaste and Ida, 

and Phillip Cribb of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 

spoke on the historical orchid collections and 

illustrations housed there as well as the controversial 

topic of how many orchid species there are. Cassio van 

den Berg from Universidade Estadual de Feira de 

Santana in Bahia, Brazil, delivered a phylogenetic 

overview of the Epidendroideae based on DNA 

sequences. Alec Pridgeon from Kew rounded out the 

roster of 24. 

Proceedings of the Conference will soon be 

available in a different format than the customary book 

that costs well over $100 and takes over a year to 

produce. A set of DVDs will feature recordings of all 

lectures (a boon to program chairpersons of local orchid 

societies) and CDs with the authors' PowerPoint 

presentations and list of references. There will be some 

extras, too: photos of social events, orchids, and people. 

Even if you were unable to attend this groundbreaking 

event, the DVDs will put you in the front row to see 

and hear some of the best-known orchid scientists. The 

price and date of availability have not yet been 

determined, but watch the pages of Orchids and the 

Ecuagenera website (www.ecuagenera.com) for more 

news. 

The second Conference in the series is being 

planned for November in 2007 at the Universidad 

Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) in Loja, Ecuador. 

Its modern convention hall, with several salons seating 

a total of 900 persons, has hosted international 

conferences on biodiversity of the Andes and 

Amazonia and also national conferences associated 

with tourism and education. We hope to see you all 

there in 2007 and share the beauty of the Andes, 

especially its orchids and people.
