2009 Charity Gala is a big hit! 

Less than a week before Thanksgiving, on November 21, 2009, guests of Waterbury 

Hospital’s 2009 Annual Gala entered a harvest-themed wonderland. The Villa Rosa 

Wedding and Banquet Facility was transformed by cornucopias of flowers, wheat, and 

vegetables spilling out onto the dining tables. The silent auction gift baskets wove 

around the entrance to the Villa among strewn leaves and mums. With over 500 guests 

in attendance, a heated and colored floodlit tent framed the entrance, showcasing the 

many silent auction items. This, the tenth annual gala, was appropriately titled, “Let’s 

Celebrate” to honor the decade milestone.

The proceeds from the Gala were earmarked for the 

Critical Care Unit of Waterbury Hospital which helps 

over 1,300 people yearly. Infusion pumps with “smart” 

technology, advanced monitoring systems, specialized 

beds and updated ventilators are some of the unit’s current 

needs that the proceeds will provide. John Tobin, 

President and CEO of Waterbury Hospital, thanked the 

clinicians, physicians, nursing staff and other professionals 

who serve in this key healing area. 

The diamond raffle attracted a flood of formally-dressed 

guests hoping to win the three stunning diamond jewelry 

pieces donated by Onyx II Jewelers of Watertown. 

Raffle ticket buyers were given small blinking orange 

lights to wear, sparking even more interest in the raffle. 

As guests dined on filet mignon and stuffed jumbo 

shrimp, a beaming Richard Smith, long-time Waterbury 

Hospital social worker, was honored as the 2009 

Humanitarian of the Year. A taped tribute from colleagues 

and clients praised him for his tireless and creative 

approaches to bolster the lives of his clients. One 

highly visible effort of their’s is the Waterbury Hospital 

Project Photography Club, whose president, Leroy 

Hilliard, praised Smith as not only a mentor, but a friend. 

Throughout the evening, guests were entertained by the 

driving sounds of Third Shift, headlined by Waterbury 

Hospital’s own songstress Nadina Perry. The crowd 

appreciated the Villa Rosa’s large dance floor, filling it 

with energetic dancing. 

The guests were amused to see several hospital colleagues 

don various states of attire to promote the six 

live auction Packages. Emcee (and hospital Chief 

Development Officer) Tom Missett was ably assisted in 

his role as Auctioneer by several members of the Gala 

Committee, including Cyndi Lompert, Steve Jalowiec, 

Craig Carrigan and a Gala Co-Chair Dr. Carl Sherter. 

The Reverend Richard Bollea (Committee member and 

hospital chaplain), wearing a straw hat and tropical 

print shirt, sang about the beauties of St. Lucia, an auction 

get-away destination in the Windward Islands. The 

top money draw this year was a dinner in a private 

home, prepared by renowned chef Carole Peck. 

As the evening wound down, with only the diehard 

dancers left, all went home pleased that their good time 

had raised a harvest of money for such an important 

cause. The total raised was almost $95,000, which is 

“immensely gratifying in this uncertain economy, “ said 

chief development officer Tom Missett. “The Waterbury 

Hospital community should be proud of itself. Sponsors, 

staff, donors and guests all came together to make a 

good thing happen.”

Founded as the Hospital Aid 

Society in 1890, The Waterbury 

Hospital Auxiliary, Inc., recently 

celebrated 120 years of service at 

the Poli Club of the Palace Theater. 

The oldest hospital auxiliary in 

Connecticut, it has grown from the 

original 40 members to a membership 

of more than 300.

the Auxiliary’s long list of accomplishments, 

including donations of 

more than $2 million towards medical 

equipment and other hospital

support and

families and the

The original founders’ vision was to 

“give aid by furnishing clothing, 

bedding, delicacies, papers, books, 

pictures and other needed articles”. 

In recent years the 

Waterbury Hospital Auxiliary, Inc. 

has contributed funds to help build

the Harold Leever Regional Cancer 

Center, enhance the hospital main 

entrance and Woodward Lobby,

payment system for employees. A 

recent gift of $40,000 helped to 

facilitate the purchase of a reporting/monitoring 

system for the 

Cardiopulmonary Department. 

The Auxiliary established the lobby 

coffee bar, sponsors the popular 

gift shop and maintains the attractive 

art corridor. Since Auxiliary 

members keep close contact with 

the hospital community, they are 

especially good at devising ways to 

meet basic patient needs. They 

supply teddy bears to calm children 

undergoing medical procedures, 

knit items for newborns, 

award 

health field scholarships, 

and 

recently provided 

a “blanket 

warmer” for the 

CathLab. 

Successful fundraisers 

have 

included house 

tours, fashion 

shows, luncheons 

and the sale of 

signature chocolate butterflies. The 

dedicated Auxiliary Board and all 

hard-working members welcome 

people to join their mission of 

promoting Waterbury Hospital 

and helping to fund strategic 

hospital needs.

As the rain held off, golfers took their best shots at the 16th Annual Charity Golf Classic, which was fully booked at 144 players. 

16th Annual Charity Golf Classic a 

Swinging Success 

Overcast skies and an uncertain economy did not dampen 

Waterbury Hospital’s 16th Annual Charity Golf Classic held at The 

Country Club of Waterbury on Monday, June 15, 2009. The fully 

booked event saw 144 golfers zip out in golf carts for an afternoon 

flight of skill and camaraderie. Despite a quick sprinkle, the predicted 

thunderstorms never arrived. One golfer even displayed a 

weather map on his cell phone showing the weather system dividing, 

like the parting of the Red Sea, around Waterbury! 

Besides playing the 18 holes, golfers also participated in a putting 

contest, a hole-in-one contest to win a car donated by Loehmann- 

Blasius Chevrolet, and vigorous bidding on nearly two dozen raffle 

items. A wheelbarrow full of fine liquors was one particularly 

enticing item. Each golf foursome had its picture taken by 

Waterbury Hospital’s Project Photography Club, overseen by 

social worker Richard Smith. After play was over and the golfers 

went through the bountiful buffet line, they looked out over the 

beautiful Donald J. Ross-designed course from the Country Club’s 

elevated perch, and relived some of the day’s finer moments. One 

golfer, who has supported the Golf Classic for years, expressed 

his pleasure that the historic Country Club of Waterbury had 

become the event’s home. During dinner, Golf Committee 

Chairman Glenn Marx of Webster Bank emceed the raffle which 

raised additional funds for hospital needs. 

The full turnout and support by nearly fifty sponsors, with Carmody 

& Torrance again the Champion Sponsor, enabled this year’s Golf 

Classic to raise over $73,000 for Waterbury Hospital’s Critical Care 

Unit. Dr. Jo-anne Cosgriff, Director of Critical Care, said that 

many of the Unit’s current needs include a monitoring system, 

ventilators, specialized beds and other “smart” medical technology 

to enhance patient care. 

Waterbury Hospital’s Charity Golf Classic has been one of the hospital’s 

major fundraisers for nearly two decades. The enthusiastic 

support of the Greater Waterbury business community and the 

cooperation of the weather ensured that this year’s event was 

another great success.

ACCESS PROGRAM (WHAP) 

IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE 

Leslie Swiderski is Waterbury Hospital’s 

Program Coordinator for the Waterbury 

Health Access Program (WHAP). When 

Leslie’s mother, Ann Kopp Scranton, died on 

November 1 this year, her family asked that 

gifts in her memory be directed to the 

support of this program, to bring hope and 

healing to many lives. This request stemmed 

from Ann’s strong belief in equal access to 

healthcare. These gifts are currently helping 

to supplement the diminished 

level of federal funds available 

for the uninsured. “The program’s 

mission is to provide 

access to medical care 

regardless of one’s ability to 

pay,” said Swiderski. 

An estimated 30,000 adults and 

children in the Greater 

Waterbury Area live without 

health insurance. The Waterbury Health 

Access Program provides bilingual, coordinated 

case management services that link 

these patients to existing medical entitlement 

programs, a medical home, and the coordination 

of individual care. Qualified patients are 

enrolled into the WHAP donated-care component 

(Waterbury Project Access) in which 340 

area physicians, three community clinics, and 

the two area hospitals (Waterbury Hospital 

and Saint Mary’s Hospital) provide donated 

care. “The perception is that these are destitute 

people,” said Swiderski. “However, it is 

estimated that 80% of the uninsured in the 

U.S. are from working families. Others just 

need assistance during a period of unemployment. 

WHAP is able to leverage $1.56 of 

donated services for every $1.00 contributed, 

so each gift is worth a gift and a half!” 

Significant state grant funding for WHAP will 

end in June, 2010. While the program also 

receives support from the Connecticut 

Community Foundation, the Naugatuck 

Savings Bank Foundation, HUD, and the 

United Way of Greater Waterbury, it will now 

rely on contributed income more than ever. 

“With the economy in its current state and 

the area unemployment rate of about 11%, I 

can’t imagine how the growing number of 

uninsured will access healthcare 

without the services provided by 

WHAP,” said Swiderski. Through 

November, WHAP evaluated 

7,759 referrals in 2009, and has 

averaged over 3,000 active 

patients serviced each year. 

WHAP has begun to implement a 

shared electronic medical 

record in all outpatient clinics in 

Waterbury, eliminating duplicated services 

that stretch everyone’s budgets. Patients are 

also enrolled in a Pharmacy Assistance prescription 

drug program to obtain generic 

medications. Since its inception in 2005, care 

and medication for uninsured and underinsured 

residents of the Greater Waterbury 

Area provided by WHAP and its volunteer 

medical professionals is valued at $3,437,147.
