2010 Annual Report

Imagine you are a 16-year-old girl, lying in a hospital 

bed, with an I.V. and chemo running through your 

veins. Your long hair just fell out and your friends aren’t 

allowed to visit. Then you learn that the Make-A-Wish 

Foundation® will grant your wish. 

Fast forward a year and a half and I’m waking up in 

my bed at home, with long hair again, watching “5 

Ingredient Fix” on the Food Network. I dream of how 

I would love to be in that kitchen, cooking with the 

coolest host, Claire Robinson. During my treatment 

for Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I looked forward 

to cooking, even though I was always ill and exhausted. 

I can honestly say cooking and cooking shows got me 

through some of the toughest times of my life. 

Once I was pronounced cancer free, some seriously 

magical things happened. I opened an organic sweets 

stand called Lily’s Sugar Shack at the farmers market and 

sold out each week. Soon I was being filmed in my home 

kitchen, teaching viewers in Vero Beach how to make 

things like red velvet cupcakes and vegan chocolate 

cake! And this was all prior to my wish. 

To start my wish trip, my mom and I took a luxurious 

limo ride to the airport. Once in New York City, my 

stomach swirled with a million butterflies and it hit me 

that I would soon be at the Food Network Kitchens in 

Chelsea Market, followed by a visit to the “5 Ingredient 

Fix” set to meet Claire Robinson. With the spending 

money that I received, we dined, shopped and laughed 

our way at the coolest boutiques 

and restaurants. I absorbed every 

second. Every chef I met, every 

aroma I smelled, everything I 

tasted, everything I saw, I was in 

awe. I didn’t want to blink because 

I didn’t want to miss any of it.

At the set, Claire Robinson greeted me with the happiest smile 

and the warmest hug. Surrounded by racks of the trendiest 

jeans, most beautiful tops, and coolest shoes, we sat in her 

makeup room and talked about everything from chileenriched 

dark chocolate to our favorite stores. Claire’s hair 

and makeup people made her shine. Then, I watched for 

hours as she taught the camera how to make Easy White Pizza, 

Caesar Salad with Crusty Croutons, and Mini Strawberry 

Mascarpone Tarts. It was incredible how much work and 

effort went into an episode. I was in heaven when she 

brought me the first slice of pizza right off set. Claire gave 

me a beautiful card and a bag of gifts as we said our goodbyes. 

On our last night in NYC, my mom and I saw the 

Nutcracker Ballet, courtesy of a very generous Make-A- 

Wish donor. Our seats were front and center, and I cried the 

happiest tears. I realized after the ballet how absolutely 

crazy that two years before, to the day, I was diagnosed with 

cancer. 

I have been in remission since April 2008 and live every day 

wholeheartedly. Today, I attend the University of Miami and 

love every minute of it. I am still a total foodie. I am so thankful 

for what the Make-A-Wish Foundation has done for me. It 

provided me with not only the most magical experience of 

my life, but also made it clear where I want to work someday. 

I feel that I am the luckiest girl in the world and hope to 

someday give back to the Foundation that changed my life.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida grants the 

wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions 

to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. 

Whether a child wishes to go somewhere, be someone, 

have something or meet somebody, each wish is a tasty 

combination of imagination and magic lovingly mixed to the 

perfect consistency. 

Like every great cookbook, these pages showcase the many 

ingredients that it takes to create each wish. To a child facing 

a life-threatening medical condition, a wish is not just a 

fulfilled dream; it’s the chance to be a carefree kid and to 

once again look toward the future.

We granted 544 heartfelt wishes this year – 

the most ever in our chapter’s history. 

The Award Goes To 

The Southern Florida chapter received two great 

honors from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® 

of America – the Outstanding Mission Delivery 

Award for granting the most wishes in our 

history and the Wish Fulfillment Partnership 

Award for aiding chapters that are struggling 

to grant wishes.

Dear Make-A-Wish friend, 

First and foremost, we are proud to report that the Make-A-Wish 

Foundation® of Southern Florida granted 544 wishes this year 

and assisted fellow chapters with another 96 wishes. Thus we 

directly touched 640 families – that’s the most ever in our history. 

Straight from a child’s imagination, a wish is food for the 

soul. Whether a child wishes to have a treasured gift, go 

on a dream vacation, meet an adored celebrity or be an 

aspired occupation, the wish kitchen whips up a whole new 

recipe of hope, strength and joy that can forever change the 

lives of the child and his or her family. 

It takes the creativity, passion and hard work of many 

different chefs – our generous donors, committed volunteers, 

visionary board of directors and dedicated staff. We are 

grateful to our supporters who contribute just the right 

ingredients to make each wish a masterpiece. 

The Southern Florida chapter has grown from granting 

a wish every 180 days in 1983 to granting a wish 

every 16 hours. It’s a true testament of the caring 

community that we live in that we continue to deliver 

our mission to more and more deserving children 

even during tough economic times. With the ongoing 

help from our supporters, we are confident that we will continue 

to hold the recipe for wish-granting success.

The Impact of a Wish 

According to a recent independent survey* of wish parents, 

the impact of a wish come true continues long after the wish 

is fulfilled. 

89 percent of wish parents observed increases in their 

child’s emotional strength, which can help them improve 

their health status. 

A wish come true helps a child feel stronger, more energetic, 

more willing and able to battle his or her life-threatening 

medical condition. For many children, it marks a turning 

point in their medical fight. 

84 percent of parents observed a decrease in their 

children’s anxieties or fears. 

A wish improves a child’s state of mind, replacing fear with 

happiness and helping them to feel like normal kids again. 

Through their wish experience, wish kids feel less isolated 

and more empowered to take back control of their lives. 

98 percent of parents felt the wish experience gave them 

the opportunity to be a “normal” family again. 

Life-threatening medical conditions impact parents and 

siblings on mental and emotional levels. The wish experience 

helps strengthen a family through a return to normalcy, 

turning feelings of fear and stress into hope and optimism.

Preparation: 

Slowly introduce the courageous and deserving 

child to the 2 passionate wish granters. Combine 

the imagination and creativity until a true heartfelt 

wish becomes apparent. Mix in the dedicated wish 

coordinator along with the passion, hard work and 

a sprinkle of magic. Add the finishing touches with 

a generous donor. Blend in a dash of hope, a dollop 

of strength and a pinch of joy.

Nine-year-old LaJerrick, who is living with congenital heart 

disease, wished to meet LaDainian Tomlinson of the New York 

Jets. He would have been happy to spend just 5 minutes with his 

favorite NFL star and humanitarian, but experienced a whole lot 

more. 

LaJerrick and his family left their Indiantown home and headed 

to New Jersey for an off-season outing with the New York Jets at 

their training facility. He was greeted with a welcome message 

on the television in the lobby and a handshake from Jets General 

Manager Mike Tannenbaum. 

Once he was escorted to the locker room, he discovered his 

personal locker loaded with Jets gear and keepsakes. Before 

heading out to watch and participate in team practice, LaJerrick 

signed a replica contract making him an honorary Jet for the day. 

Meeting Tomlinson was a greater thrill than he anticipated. They 

chatted like buddies, tossed a ball around and played video 

games together in the players lounge. LaJerrick even huddled 

with the team and amassed an impressive autograph collection. 

According to his mother, “It was like Christmas in July! I was so 

overwhelmed that LaJerrick got to live one day as a normal child.” 

LaJerrick’s wish to meet LaDainian Tomlinson was a part of ESPN’s

Wish granted in honor of Laurence Leavy

When 7-year-old Isabella from Hialeah wished 

to go to Walt Disney World®, she had one very 

specific request – to meet her favorite princess, Snow 

White. Little did she know, the fairy-tale experience 

that was ahead of her. 

She and her family explored all the theme parks 

including the Magic Kingdom® and Disney’s Animal 

Kingdom® Park with front-of-the-line access to the 

hottest attractions. She was ecstatic to just ride the 

rides, meet the characters and watch the numerous 

parades and shows... 

But with help from her fairy godmother-in-training and 

a little magic dust, she was transformed from head to toe 

into Princess Isabella. Isabella received a glamorous 

hairstyle, glittering makeup, a beautiful gown and 

a sparkling tiara. Afterward, she joined her fellow 

princesses for dinner at the Akershus Restaurant 

in Epcot®. 

While staying at Give Kids The World Village, a resort 

reserved for wish families, she received even more 

VIP treatment. She could eat ice cream for breakfast, 

play on a life-size CandyLand board game and 

ride the whimsical carousel over and over again. 

She was even a special guest at a birthday party 

for Mayor Clayton, the Village’s 6-foot-tall resident 

rabbit. Another highlight was decorating her very 

own star that would be hoisted to its permanent 

home on the ceiling of the Castle of Miracles. For 

seven magical days, it was like she stepped right into 

her very own fairy tale!

Louis has always been fascinated by the military – 

because they are brave and they protect people. 

At the grocery store or on the street, if there’s 

a military person within his sight, he approaches 

them with an enthusiastic smile and an arsenal of 

questions. 

When he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma 

at the age of 4, his love of the army took on a 

whole new meaning as he battled the “germies” 

to get better and become a veteran. Louis and his 

father shaved their heads not because he may lose 

his hair but because that’s what soldiers do. His 

next assignment was to find a fort “because EVERY 

soldier has a fort.” 

With one wish, his army-themed play set was 

delivered, fully-equipped with slides, monkey bars 

and everything Louis needs for some carefree 

combat. A small brigade of special friends – army 

reservists – stopped by to join in the fun and 

keep him on top of his duties. They gave him a 

camouflage uniform and sleeping bag, dog tags, a 

canteen and some face paint. They taught him all 

about his new gear. 

According to Louis’ mother, “He couldn’t believe 

it when the reservists showed up. It just solidified 

that he would get through the fight. He loves 

his play set and doesn’t stop talking about his 

special day.”

When she was a little girl, Arisleyda often envisioned what 

her dream Quinceañera would be like. But when she turned 

15, her dreams of having the traditional Hispanic coming-ofage 

celebration were dampened because she was battling 

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. That’s why she wished to have a huge 

18 th birthday bash. 

With a gorgeous gown, professional hairstyling and glamorous 

makeup, Arisleyda was ready for her grand entrance to the 

banquet hall in a sleek limousine. She cried when she arrived 

because it was so beautiful. Every last detail was exactly as 

she had requested. 

Surrounded by family and friends, Arisleyda celebrated her 

18 th birthday with the big bash she has always dreamt of. 

Together, they enjoyed a delicious dinner and cake and 

danced the night away as a DJ played her favorite tunes. A 

professional photographer and a videographer were there to 

capture all the special moments. 

Arisleyda even had two “costume changes” into other beautiful 

dresses. She also performed special dances with her father, 

brothers and friends choreographed to songs from her favorite 

musical, “Phantom of the Opera.” She truly was the belle of the 

ball.

Six-year-old Emily was so excited to tell her wish granters what 

her heartfelt wish was that she created pages and pages 

of artwork to illustrate everything she wanted to do on her 

vacation to Hawaii. 

As the plane touched down in Oahu, Emily and her family 

said “aloha” to paradise with fragrant lei necklaces. During 

their 8-day stay, they snorkeled, took a submarine ride, relaxed 

in hammocks and visited Pearl Harbor. Emily also enjoyed a 

“girls’ day” with her mother, getting pedicures and eating lunch 

together. 

Emily was so proud to be on her wish trip that she wore her 

Make-A-Wish shirt everywhere. With help from her mother, she 

added her own touch of style – fringing the sleeves of her shirt. 

The best part was swimming with dolphins. Emily jumped right 

in the water and quickly got acquainted with Nainoa, which 

fittingly means “protector of children.” Together, they played, swam 

and hugged. Not wanting to get out of the water, Emily swam 

to the far side one more time with her new friend. According 

to her, the dolphin swim and the entire trip was “magical.” 

The time change proved to be a challenge but it also 

made for more fun as they found themselves eating 

breakfast at 2 a.m. Then at an authentic luau, Emily and 

her family stayed up late eating, dancing and laughing. 

Emily’s mother said, “I was absolutely floored by everything that 

we got to experience. It was a vacation that we never would have 

been able to do on our own. I had no idea it would be this beautiful 

and this wonderful.”

Our internship program is expanding. This 

year, we utilized 12 skilled interns in the 

following areas: wish granting, special events, 

branding & communications, donor relations, 

and volunteer services.

most successful Cornerstone Society reception, 

raising nearly $200,000.

There are never too many cooks in the wish kitchen. We are fortunate 

to have more than 550 volunteers who have a hand in each wish that 

we grant. We are grateful to our volunteers for each bringing their own 

signature spice to the table to help make wishes come true.
