Leland L. Wilson retired from
teaching at age 65 to become
a student. After a 24-year
stint on the University of Northern
Iowa faculty, Wilson and his wife,
Margaret, moved to Kentucky so he
could feed his voracious appetite
for learning at the University of
Kentucky in Lexington. Two perks
lured the Wilsons to the grassy
knolls of Kentucky: the university
offered free classes to anyone 65
years and over, and they could live
close to one of their daughters,
Mary Sue Coleman.
That was in 1979, and Coleman
was a biochemist on the faculty
at the University of Kentucky.
Coleman now serves as the
president of the University of
Michigan. To honor her father’s
extraordinary contributions to UNI
in the field of chemistry, Mary
Sue Coleman, and her husband
Kenneth Coleman, recently made a
$100,000 gift to UNI to establish the
University of
Northern Iowa
Endowed Lecture Series Honors Former Chemistry Head
Leland Wilson Chemistry
Lectureship.
Wilson became the first
head of the Department
of Chemistry at UNI in
1968, and served in that
capacity until 1975. He
retired as a professor of
chemistry in 1979, and
died in 1993 at the age of
79.
At his retirement
reception, Wilson said,
“What stands out in
my memory here is
my association with
the students in this
department. It’s been a
tremendous experience.
I feel we’ve been
extremely fortunate in
this department. Although
it’s not a big one, our
students have done
exceedingly well.”
Memories Inspire Scholarship for Math and Science
1961 – it was
a very good year.
Gas cost 31 cents
per gallon, a new
Chevy fully loaded
cost $2,529, a VW
Beetle cost $1,623
including an AM
radio, postage
stamps were 4 cents
and tuition at Iowa
State Teachers
College (now UNI) was $220 per
semester.
For William Poston and Marcia
Bottorff it was not only a
very good year, but a year of
memorable milestones. These
college sweethearts both
graduated in 1961 from Iowa State
Teachers College and married the
same year.
Bill says, “I came to ISTC in 1959
from Morningside College with
little in the way of resources.
My father was a carpenter in
northwest Iowa, so I depended heavily upon
campus jobs to support my needs for tuition,
books and board. I held five jobs during my
senior year: breakfast courier between the
Mary Sue Coleman, a biochemist
and the lecture series’ first speaker
in 1997, said she is very pleased
to create an endowment that
will continue to recognize the
contributions her father made to
UNI and his field.
“We wanted to give something back
in partial payment for the wonderful
education and opportunities the state of
Iowa has provided for us.
Commons and the College Hospital;
lab assistant to Dr. Verlin Lee in his
physics classes; classroom proctor in
physical science where instruction
was delivered by closed-circuit
television (black & white if you
can believe it!); head resident in
Baker Hall; and I delivered films
and equipment to professors in the
AV lab. On top of
it all, I carried a
pretty heavy load
in science and
student taught
math, biology and
physical science at
the Lab School. I
have no complaints,
because to this day,
Marcia and I still
value the wonderful
education we
received as students
at the university.”
Both Bill and
Marcia enjoyed
successful careers
in education and remain active in their
profession. Marcia taught school for a time
and later returned home to raise their two
daughters. Bill taught math and science until
Today, UNI’s Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry is reputed as one of the top
undergraduate programs in the nation. For the
past 15 years, the department has graduated
more bachelor degree chemists than any other
public university in the state of Iowa. The
Bachelor of Science program is accredited by
the American Chemical Society. Bill Harwood,
head of the chemistry department, said the
lectureship will allow UNI to bring nationally
recognized scholars and leaders in chemistry
and science to campus. He also stated that
the gift will enhance UNI’s leadership role
in the Mathematics and Science Education
Collaborative Initiative.
Math & Science Collaborative Initiative
According to Department of Education
reports, Iowa is experiencing a shortage of
math and science teachers. The result of this
shortage is compromised math and science
education for many of Iowa’s students.
This stands as a stark contrast to the reality
that fifteen of the twenty fastest growing
occupations of the 21st century will require
substantial math and science preparation. In
response to these challenges, the Board of
Regents, State of Iowa, requested that UNI
lead a mathematics and science education
collaborative initiative that includes the
University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
The Regents collaborative initiative has
three basic goals:
• To improve mathematics and science
performance of Iowa students.
• To prepare more high quality mathematics
and science teachers for Iowa’s schools.
• Promote statewide collaboration and
cooperation.
he completed graduate school and then went
into administration. He served as a principal
and assistant superintendent in the largest
district in Arizona. After serving 15 years as a
superintendent in both Arizona and Montana,
the Postons returned to Iowa where Bill
completed his career as a professor at Iowa
State University retiring in 2005.
Bill says, “We know there is a shortage of math
and science teachers in Iowa and elsewhere.
We know firsthand how difficult it is to obtain
a solid education with adequate financial
resources. Moreover, we also cherish living
in Iowa and we wanted to give something
back in partial payment for the wonderful
education and opportunities the state of Iowa
has provided for us. It only seemed natural that
we set up a scholarship fund for Iowa students
who are majoring in math or science education
and who have limited financial resources. Those
criteria mirror our own experiences.”
It was a very good year
Joy Cole Corning ’51/54
We are pleased to report that fiscal
year 2006/2007 was a very good year
by several measures. Each year the
Foundation makes millions of dollars available to
the university for students and faculty according to
donors’ wishes. Our endowment is valued at $55.8
million with a return rate of 17.4 percent. That is
great news for our students and faculty. It means
expanded opportunities for a fuller life for those
who study, learn and teach at UNI.
It is also noteworthy that the Foundation broke
records:
More than 16,000 alumni and friends contributed
to the Foundation this past year.
$19.1 million was raised in contributions and
expectancies.
In addition, it was a record-breaking year for
planned giving. It was encouraging to see 48 alumni
and friends remember UNI as they made their wills
and estate plans. The gifts will eventually make
more than $12 million available for scholarships in
music, athletics, faculty assistantships and a myriad
of other academic areas along with funds for faculty
mentoring and for building the Vision Fund. We are
Travis Walker and Julie Baldwin,
the first UNI theatre students to
benefit from the Robert O. Wise
Broadway Tour Endowment, had the
opportunity to experience the lights on
Broadway firsthand during a five-day
theatre study tour to New York City.
In 1950 Robert Wise completed
his degree at Iowa State Teachers
College in communication/theatre
education. He served 34 years
on the administrative staff at
Rochester Community College
in Minnesota until he retired in
1991. When he passed away
in 2005, a generous estate gift
created an endowment to provide funds for two
outstanding theatre students. The fund pays all
travel expenses, lodging, meals and tickets for
at least four Broadway productions.
Travis and Julie also had the opportunity to
see many of the sights in The Big Apple and
spend time with other UNI theatre alumni
who could share some of their experiences
and advice. Jess White ’04, Katie-Sue Nicklos
’04, Shannon Patterson ’00, Mike Giese ’00,
Matt Mullin ’97, Janet Casson ’00 and Sara
Overgaard ’00 all offered to be resources for
students in the future.
Julie commented, “I believe this amazing
experience did exactly what Robert Wise
wanted. We saw every aspect of the city, so it
became a place where real people lived and
worked and not just a giant tourist trap.”
UNI theatre department head and associate
professor Eric Lange accompanied the students. “As
well as seeing some top-notch productions, it was
exciting to see the students connect with Theatre
UNI alumni who are active in a variety of theatrical
pursuits. They were able to answer the students’
questions about how they found success in the city,
and to offer insights about how to get and keep work
in theatre. The students who went on the trip came
away with a much clearer picture about their own
interests and their perspective about life after college.”
When asked about his reaction Travis Walker
responded, “First of all, just being in the city,
extremely grateful for the trust that
friends and alumni have in UNI’s
future.
It is you, our loyal donors, who
are helping us build a solid
financial foundation for the future.
You can continue to expect
only excellence from UNI. Each
time you give to UNI, you are
demonstrating your confidence in
the university and you are helping
students and faculty achieve more
than they ever imagined—thank
you.
getting acclimated with modes of
transportation and such made me
meet unrestricted needs in the theatre
department.
Endowments provide lasting
support
An endowment is a permanent fund,
established within the University of
Northern Iowa Foundation, which
provides support for a designated
scholarship, academic program or
faculty position. Only the interest
earned by the endowment fund can be
spent; the principal remains intact for
perpetuity.

$3 million gift funds programs served by the Human Performance Complex
Northern Iowa Student Government President Andrew Morse
thanks Jacobson for his gift to the university.
Jacobson and Preident Allen show off front-page
coverage of his gift.
Panther Champions Scholarship Fund
The UNI Panther Scholarship Club (PSC) has been a key player in ensuring athletic scholarship support at UNI
remains strong. To learn more about becoming a Panther Champion and the Panther Champions Endowment
Fund, please call Steve Gearhart, assistant athletic director for development at (319) 273-7817 or Noreen
Hermansen, vice president of the UNI Foundation at (319) 273-2186.
Below you will find those individuals/companies who have generously supported UNI athletics through
the establishment of an athletic scholarship endowment or through an annually funded Panther Champions
Scholarship. Thanks to all the “Panther Champions.”
Richard O. (Dick) Jacobson, a Belmond, Iowa, native, is the founder
of Jacobson Companies. Beginning in 1968 with a single Des Moines
warehouse, Jacobson grew the warehouse facilities to more than 30 million
square feet, while expanding the company into a business encompassing eight
separate companies and employing more than 6,500 people in 25 states.
One of his recent business ventures is in the ethanol industry. Hawkeye Renewables
is the third-largest producer of ethanol in the United States.
Jacobson has pledged $3 million
to support the completion of
UNI’s Human Performance
Complex. He has challenged
UNI to secure an additional $2
million from other sources to
help fund programs served by the
Complex.
Currently under construction, the Richard
O. Jacobson Human Performance Complex
encompasses a three-story addition within the
north end of the UNI-dome; the two-story Human
Performance Center, which will serve athletic
training education also includes: Youth and
Human Services, the Global Health Corps,
the National Program for Playground Safety,
Camp Adventure and a community outreach
partnership between UNI, Allen Hospital and
Cedar Valley Medical Specialists; and remodeled
portions of the Wellness and Recreation Center,
including the Strength and Conditioning Center,
laboratory and locker rooms.
“This is a phenomenal opportunity to build a
first-class facility to house the many programs
that will enhance the lives of thousands of Iowans
throughout the state. I am pleased to be a part of
this project,” says Dick Jacobson.
Imagine the Impact
Imagine the impact that one donor can have
on one UNI student. Imagine the impact that
one scholarship has on one student studying to
become a math teacher; the impact of one math
teacher on a room full of 30 fourth graders staring
at her with perplexed faces; those fourth graders
progressing through elementary, junior high, high
school and college with confident, inquisitive
minds. Now, multiply that one donor by 16,000
per year—imagine the impact!
Thanks to all of you—the 16,000 who are making a difference in the
lives of our students, faculty and the world beyond our classrooms. We
have never had this many contributors in one year!
As we look to the future, UNI is well poised to outperform its past
in fulfilling its mission. Imagine the possibilities as we seize every
opportunity to recruit the best and the brightest students and faculty,
and to provide them with the support they need to succeed. We
are prepared to propel UNI to new heights. Thank you for your
contributions to this worthy goal and to our success.
Helping Others
Name: Alejandra Garcia
“There are no scholarships in Lima, Peru,
my native country,” says international
student, Alejandra Garcia. She is one of
five recipients of a UNI Parents Association
(UNIPA) Scholarship for the 2007/2008
academic year.
All first-time contributions to the UNI Annual Fund will be matched up to $50,000
Alumni provide banner year of
support for UNI Annual Fund
“What a banner year for the UNI Annual Fund.
While there is a downward trend in alumni
giving across the nation, UNI has experienced
a steady upturn in alumni participation over the
past three years. With a 13 percent participation
rate, UNI leads the way over peer institutions,
which average 6.1 percent. Much of our
success is attributed to the excellent rapport that
our student callers develop with alumni,” says
Vicki Collum, director of UNI Annual Giving.
Contributions to the UNI Annual Fund provide
the resources to acquire student opportunities
such as travel, internships, lectures by
internationally renowned speakers and
scholarships.
Graduates of the last decade are invited to
become a part of the UNI Annual Fund’s most
prestigious giving society – The Campanile
Society.
“We realize new graduates face many life
changes in their first years out of UNI. Student
loans, establishing families and careers, moves,
etc. make it difficult for our young alums to
support UNI in the way they might wish to,”
said Vicki Collum, director of Annual Giving.
“We wanted to give them an opportunity to be
recognized for their leadership in giving, and
become part of a very special group of leaders
who support the annual fund at a high level,”
said Collum.
UNI
“Receiving a scholarship is very special to me and especially a parentawarded
scholarship. I’m in college because of my own parents’
support, both financially and through their daily encouragement,” says
Alejandra.
Five years ago Alejandra moved to Clarion, Iowa, along with her parents
and two sisters. She said her dad made the decision to step out of his
comfort zone and move his family to the United States. Her mother left
a teaching job and all her family to come here, but everyone agrees it
was the best decision.
Alejandra says, “I’m a strong advocate for helping others, so I love being
a Student Ambassador and showing potential students how wonderful
UNI is. I want to share all the good things that I’ve experienced and tell
them why UNI has been a perfect fit for me.”
Young Alums invited to become Emerging Leaders
By contributing $100 for each year after
graduation up to ten years, young alumni will
become part of The Campanile Society.
“We hope this special offer will help us
significantly recognize the generosity of our
younger alums. The Campanile Society is truly a
special group of people,” said Collum.
