he holiday season is a time to share memories, remember<br />

loved ones, exchange gifts, and celebrate friendships.<br />

"Light Up A Life" is a holiday tradition which offers us a<br />

meaningful way to remember or honor someone who has touched<br />

our lives, while making a difference in the lives of others, and at the<br />

same time, supporting the mission of <strong>Hospice</strong> & Palliative <strong>Care</strong>, <strong>Inc</strong>.<br />

Each light on the tree will remind us of someone special who<br />

brought light to our lives. Personalized tags naming all those we<br />

wish to honor or memorialize will be placed on trees across the three<br />

counties we serve as a reminder that our special loved ones have not<br />

been forgotten.<br />

The "Light Up A Life" tradition continues<br />

this year again with Melva Max<br />

chairing the event for the sixth year and<br />

will be held at several locations. Trees will<br />

be located at Sangertown Square Mall,<br />

New Hartford, AmeriCU Credit Union<br />

locations, Oneida Savings Bank in Oneida<br />

and Hamilton, Kinney’s Drugs in Old<br />

Dr. Theodore and Forge, Wal-Mart in Herkimer, and in<br />

Mrs. Melva Max<br />

Little Falls at the Little Falls Antique<br />

Center and the West Mill Shops.<br />

Through the years, many individuals and businesses sponsoring<br />

the event have coordinated these tree locations and volunteered<br />

their time to staff the locations, thus making "Light Up a Life" an<br />

annual event. Family and friends volunteer together in the spirit of<br />

giving, and are joined by businesses that make time to volunteer in<br />

the very communities that support them.<br />

"Light Up A Life" is made possible by our major sponsor,<br />

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield–Utica Region, and our media sponsors,<br />

WIBX and WKTV. This year’s Honorary Chairpersons are, in<br />

the Utica region, Senator Ray Meier; in the Rome area, James<br />

92 DAYS AND COUNTING…<br />

T<br />

hat is the number of days between November 1, 2004<br />

and February 1, 2005. A mere three months until the<br />

Siegenthaler Center (SC) is expected to welcome its<br />

first patient and family. We have waited over twenty years for this<br />

type of service, so three months should be doable. We anticipate<br />

that this center will provide a place of comfort when remaining at<br />

home is no longer an option for some families. It may not be<br />

"your" home, but it will offer a home-like environment. It will<br />

provide a private suite where a patient and their family will stay<br />

together, caring for each other, with the support of compassionate<br />

and expert staff and volunteers. It will assure your privacy in a<br />

suite for the patient and their family, while respecting your<br />

decisions about the care you will receive. Comfort and quality of<br />

life will be central to your care.<br />

Each patient’s presence in the Siegenthaler Center will be a gift<br />

to us. We will learn more about how we may better serve patients<br />

and how we may enhance emotional and spiritual support services.<br />

Patients will help us to better understand the concept of hope and<br />

how integral it is in all our lives. The irony is, basically the patient<br />

will be teaching us how to live, to better understand what is truly<br />

important as a human being, and to appreciate the value that our<br />

presence brings to each day.<br />

GRIEF & THE HOLIDAYS:<br />

For many people, the holiday season is a<br />

special time of the year marked by festive celebrations<br />

and gatherings with family and<br />

friends. It’s a time to look ahead with excitement<br />

to the approaching New Year. For those<br />

struggling with the death of a loved one, the<br />

holidays are a difficult time full of painful<br />

reminders that may magnify their sense of loss.<br />

Holiday songs on the radio “catch you”<br />

while riding in the car. Television commercials<br />

reflecting Norman Rockwell images of the season<br />

come into your living room. Neighbors’<br />

homes are decked with lights and wreaths.<br />

Sounds and sights of the holidays may seem<br />

inescapable. Coping with grief at such a time<br />

seems discordant with the world around you.<br />

Feelings of loss tend to be intensified.<br />

A suggestion for coping with grief during<br />

the holidays is to give yourself permission to<br />

do what’s comfortable. At a time of year often<br />

guided by tradition, find the way that feels<br />

right for you to make it through the season.<br />

Some people find it helpful to be with family<br />

and friends, emphasizing the familiar. Others<br />

may wish to avoid old traditions and try something<br />

different. Others will find new ways to<br />

acknowledge the season.<br />

Consider Mike when as a young boy,<br />

Thanksgiving was a time to bring family,<br />

friends, and neighbors together for a feast.<br />

Card tables were set up in the living room, the<br />

picnic table was brought in from outside, every<br />

chair seemed to be full. The year after his death<br />

from lung cancer, his wife and kids just<br />

couldn’t find the strength to host another<br />

Thanksgiving event. That year, for the first<br />

time, they had a Thanksgiving meal at a local<br />

inn. It was smaller, more intimate, and has<br />

become a new tradition for them.<br />

They gave themselves permission to do<br />

what seemed comfortable. While it seemed to<br />

go against family tradition, it actually provided<br />

the family with a special time to focus on<br />

memories of their father and the many<br />

Thanksgivings of the past.<br />

<strong>Hospice</strong> professionals offer some additional<br />

suggestions for coping with the holidays:<br />

Plan for the approaching holidays.<br />

This will, no doubt, be a difficult time for you.<br />

The additional stress may affect you emotionally,<br />

cognitively, and physically; this is a normal<br />

reaction. Be prepared and gentle to yourself.<br />

Recognize that the holidays might not be<br />

the same. Expecting everything to seem the<br />

same might lead to disappointment. Doing<br />

things a bit differently can acknowledge the<br />

change while preserving continuity with the<br />

past.<br />

Be careful not to isolate yourself.<br />

It’s all right to take time for yourself but don’t<br />

cut yourself off from the support of family and<br />

friends.<br />

The holidays may affect other family<br />

members. Talk over your plans and share your<br />

feelings. Respect the choices and needs of<br />

others, and compromise, if necessary.<br />

Avoid additional stress. Decide what you<br />

really want to do and what can be avoided.

For seniors experiencing any of these life<br />

changes:<br />

■ Any type of illness (whether first diagnosed,<br />

chronic, or terminal)<br />

■ Death of a relative, friend, or a beloved pet<br />

■ <strong>Care</strong>giving role<br />

■ Nursing home placement of a spouse<br />

■ Retirement<br />

■ Relocation – a recent move to an apartment,<br />

adult home, assisted living facility, or with<br />

other family members.<br />

These same services are provided for individuals<br />

60 years and younger in our office.<br />

Memorial Golf Tournament – June 27, 2005<br />

1pm), this golf outing attracts over 100 golfers to an event held<br />

on a perfect summer day with drawings, a live auction, and<br />

SPOTLIGHT–ONCOLOGY PRACTICE PROGRAM<br />

e are pleased to announce<br />

The Community Support Center<br />

has a new counseling program –<br />

located at Dr. Desai and Dr. Butala’s oncology practice at the Faxton<br />

Regional Cancer Center. Pat Pace, a licensed clinical social worker, is<br />

available three days a week to provide support to cancer patients and<br />

their families.<br />

Pat brings her tremendous experience in<br />

working with cancer patients, having started<br />

the social work program at Hematology<br />

Oncology Associates of CNY in Syracuse in<br />

1994. Pat began this program in our area in<br />

May, 2004 for the Community Support Center.<br />

Pat when she talks about her work states,<br />

" I absolutely love it!" She goes on to say that,<br />

"When people have cancer, they may often feel<br />

isolated or alone and when I can help them feel<br />

connected to their family, friends, and community,<br />

then I find it very rewarding."<br />

Pat’s role is varied. She states, "One of the<br />

first things I do is explain community<br />

resources and services to people to enhance<br />

their support. Establishing effective support is<br />

one of the areas for people to master when they are first diagnosed<br />

so everything can flow better from that time on. This is especially<br />

important for families with young children because the treatments<br />

and illness may interfere with all a parent has to do for their family.<br />

It’s also true for the elderly who often tend to be isolated, who live<br />

alone, or whose family lives out of the area."<br />

Pat has a valuable role in educating people<br />

because the more we understand what we are<br />

going through, the better we can cope with our<br />

situation. She also helps them process their<br />

emotions and helps them recognize what’s normal.<br />

Many patients fear that what they are going<br />

through is not normal so she can help validate<br />

what they are going through. Pat focuses on<br />

quality of life and what that means for them.<br />

Pat’s role also focuses on communication for<br />

many patients and families trying to protect one<br />

another, but they often become isolated in their<br />

own experience. Pat offers patients and families a<br />

safe place to talk with one another.<br />

Counseling services are reimbursed through<br />

insurance or a sliding fee scale. For more information,<br />
