MR. WILLIAM T. HUDTWALKER,
Principal
DEAR GRADUATES,
In my first year with you I had hoped to know all of the seniors personally. I
found this was impossible and it is my loss—but I did learn to know you through
the reading of your autobiographies. It was through these that I was apprised of
your high hopes for the future—and in many cases of your doubts.
I did not minimize the importance of finding work for which you are well
qualified and I know your concern with this phase of the future is a clear sign
of growth and maturity. Individuals are gifted in many ways and happiness lies
in identifying and developing these gifts. But know also that no person is without
limitations and that these too must be identified-and accepted!
Accept the truth then that genius is rare, that we are all capable in some
direction and limited in others. Never let preoccupation with your limitations
keep you from striving to the utmost to make your contribution to society.
In our great country most of the important work is carried on by approximately
ten percent of our population. These fifteen million people constitute our real
"Honor Society"—the substantial people without whom no real progress would
be possible. Active participation in this group is an attainable goal for all of our
graduates.
Life has many facets and you have the opportunity and the obligation of
adapting to them. It will be your privilege to contribute to the enrichment of
community life by drawing on your rich storehouse of skills. The well balanced
person is willing to accept personal limitations as well as the limitations of the
world we live in. Concentrate then on your good qualities and face life with
courage and poise.
In a less serious vein I look back on the many pleasant moments I shared with
you. I remember now your pride in exhibiting shop projects—the Christmas
assemblies at Main and Performing Arts—the concerts, plays, dance recitals—
the life-boat race with the "Christian Radich," our friends on the Norwegian
schoolshipgand your eager faces and warm greetings while moving from class
to class.
And now as you wait—expectant yet reluctant in the doorway of new ventures,
pause for a moment to reflect on all that Metropolitan has given you, and on the
things you most want to cherish and carry away.
I. have done just that—and I will always remember you—my first class—with
pride and affection!
FROM THE S E N I O R C L A S S
DEAR
GRADUATES:
Despite the many indictments made against our young, people, the experienced
teacher maintains his faith in youth. Without that faith our teaching would be
meaningless. It would be worthless.
We who have been with you day after day know your potentialities for doing
good. We have witnessed your activities in behalf of those less privileged than
yourselves. We know what enthusiasm, energy and ardor you employ in doing
what is really worthwhile.
I personally have observed the kindness, the helpfulness, and the true spirit
of charity with which our barber students gave haircuts to the young, disturbed
patients at Bellevue Hospital. I have seen the love for mankind with which our
talented Performing Arts students displayed their talents to some of the elderly,
|
disabled residents in a home for the aged. Any adult who has had the good fortune
to attend G.O. Conventions knows that there is no need for despair as far
as our high school boys and girls are concerned.
Yes, our youth are basically decent. They are fine young people. The exceptions
among them should not be permitted to damn them all.
Our confidence in your worth is one of the chief rewards that we earn from
our teaching. Our knowledge of your strength gives us all the assurance that we
need in sending you on to adult activities.
With best wishes,
Sincerely,
We have gone through our high school years and have met the requirements
that enable us to call ourselves seniors. Although some of us might think that,
since we did the work and gained the passing grades, we should be the ones to
reap the reward, we must all agree that, without the aid of our inspiring teachers,
we should not have been able to overcome some of our obstacles. We must concede
that, without these teachers who played such an important role in molding
our personalities, we could not have learned our lessons as well as most of us have.
Our teachers and counselors guided us skilfully and patiently through our high
school careers. Although they tried to make our lives as pleasant as possible, they
kept, as their main aim, our future well being. This training for the future placed
us in difficult situations sometimes, but we realize now that it was all part of a
master plan ... to prepare us for life's later trials.
We are all thankful that we were able to attend a school such as ours, with a
faculty as capable as ours. Now we bid you, Mr. Hudtwalker and our teachers,
our partners in education, a sincere goodbye.

This is our future ... and a part of our past!
This is the world we have lived in,
the world we have made our own!
P. A.
On our first day we discovered that subways
were for standing; before long,
we knew that they were for homework .. .
... and now we've discovered that
subways are for sleeping too.
In four years we have taken much pride in
and gained much understanding
from this man.
DR. FRANK H. PAINE,
Teacher-in-Charge
History informs us that man has been stimulated by
his creative ideas about everything that pertains to
life. You, as self-reliant members of this graduating
class, have given evidence of those sterling qualities
that exemplify the best characters and work traits. In
our unique school there is constant need for new ideas,
for continual development and for realistic craftsmanship.
As individuals you have tried to understand what
you are doing, you have endeavored to think through
classroom situations and you have hopes of making
contributions to keep the theater dramatic and exciting.
This apprenticeship period should fortify you
with knowledge and skill that will endure with you
through life. Remember that the usefulness of an individual
depends often on the honest recognition of
individual effort, interest and ability. In the long run,
you will be judged by what you do for yourself and
not by what others do for you.
Your cooperative attitude, your deep interest and
your earnest determination have prepared you to compete
successfully in a changing world that predicts
fantastic changes for the future in all fields. My brief
counseling periods with you as individuals have acquainted
me with your plans, your professional attitude,
your level of scholarship and your feeling about
the arts. Along with your hopeful and understanding
teachers, I shall treasure the happy thoughts I have
gained from my conversations with you. We are confident
that you will succeed in giving enthusiastic performances
in all of your future activities.
Your successful achievement here should strengthen
your self-confidence and faith in your ability to develop
your specialized talents. We assume that you
will continue to take an active part with those dynamic
forces that are symbolic of lasting values in the professional
arts. Your earnest efforts and helpful attitudes
will give you time to hold pleasant thoughts about
your advisors, your teachers and your friends at
Performing Arts.
Best wishes to all of you.
In four years we have learned more from these people
than can be said of any other group of people in our
lives so far. Therefore, to these who understand us
and who work unceasingly, we give, with all our hearts,
our thanks!
We know more of each other
than of any other group of
people. We have lived
almost every waking moment
together for the
past four years.
HERE WE ARE!!
