(C) WEARING WELDER'S GLOVES, APRONS, WELDING HELMETS OR SHIELDS AND NON-
CONDUCTING
RUBBER BOOTS.
2. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO AVOID DISCHARGING CLOTHING BECAUSE OF HEAT OR HUMIDITY IN
AREAS WHERE THE BODY, ARMS OR SHOULDERS MAY COME INTO CONTACT WITH EARTHED PARTS
OF THE SHIP. GLOVES AND CLOTHING SHOULD BE KEPT AS DRY AS POSSIBLE.
3. WELDING SHOULD NOT BE UNDERTAKEN WHEN STANDING IN WATER OR WHEN ANY PART OF THE
BODY IS RESTING IN WATER.
4. IN SPECIALLY DAMP, HUMID AND CONFINED CONDITIONS THE NEED TO CARRY OUT THE WELDING
SHOULD BE RECONSIDERED IN THE LIGHT OF THESE ADDITIONAL HAZARDS.
5. SUCH A DECISION SHOULD BE TAKEN BY THE CHIEF ENGINEER, WHO SHOULD ALSO BE THE ONE TO
DECIDE ON THE SUITABILITY OF A PERSON TO UNDERTAKE SUCH WELDING.

2 BE SURE ALL GAS CONNECTIONS ARE TIGHT. LEAKS ARE POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS. IF IN QUESTION,
CHECK WITH SOAP AND WATER SOLUTION FOR LEAKAGE.
3. NEVER USE OXYGEN TO BLOW OFF CHIPS OR CLEAN CLOTHING. IT'S NOT AIR AND CAN CAUSE INJURY.
4. A TORCH IS NOT A HAMMER. FOR YOUR SAFETY DON'T USE IT AS ONE.

SCHEMATIC ARRANGEMENT FOR SEA VALVE TESTING
Procedure:
1. Close sea chest valve and block valve 2.
2. Drain water from section of pipe between sea chest valve and block valve 2.
3. Close inboard sea valve (block valve 1).

4. Pressurise pipe to approximately 3.5 kg/cm (50 psi)
5. Watch for a pressure drop over 15 minutes.
6. If a pressure drop is noted, check alongside the ship for bubbles of air
escaping
through the sea chest valve. Also check at test fitting B for leakage, if
necessary
using a balloon over the fitting to test for slow leaks.
7. If the inboard and outboard sea valves are tight, block valve 2 may be tested
by
opening the inboard sea valve and closing test fitting B. The line should be
repressurised to about 3.5 kg/cm2
and the pressure drop observed over 15

INERTING THE GRAPH (THEORY) AND THE REGULATIONS (REALITY)
Whereas it could be believed that when the O 2 content in tanks has been reduced to below 11% the explosion risks are
gone, nevertheless there are certain additional risks, which have influenced authorities to lower the permissible O 2 level in
tanks.
The main risks are:
a) Inaccuracy of measuring instruments
b) Unusual cargo having a higher flammable range
c) Pockets of O 2 remaining in certain parts of the tank
d) Possible small leaks in system
The flammable area has been marked on the graph and this corresponds to theoretical criteria.
A second envelope, which enlarges the flammable area, is also shown. The additional area has been dotted and
represents the area of safety as perceived by authorities.
These regulations and standards are the results of numerous years of experimentation by oil companies and should be
always followed.

The various operations have been drawn on the graph to illustrate their effect on the gas mixture in tanks.
Primary inerting is shown in red (02
content is reduced from 21% to about 4%) at point A.
Loading or discharging will raise the hydrocarbon content to point B and if COW is carried out the level will rise even
higher to point C.
There is no danger at points A, B or C as they are well outside the flammable area.
However if vessel is gas freed (without purging) from points C or B along lines CO or BO, the mixture at some stage will
enter the flammable area and the tank atmosphere will become a potential explosion hazard.
By purging, shown in green, the hydrocarbons are diluted to below 2% to point D, and gas freeing, shown in blue, can
be safely carried out without ever entering the flammable area.
It should also be emphasized that water-washing tanks is a dangerous operation and should only be performed under
inerted conditions with positive pressure.
