Introduction
S
tomiiform, aulopiform and myctophiform fishes
are included in the Teleostei division and the Euteleostei
subdivision of the chordate Actinopterygii class, and according
to the classification proposed by Nelson (2006),
they make up three superorders: Stenopterygii (Stomiiformes
order), Cyclosquamata (Aulopiformes order), and
Scopelomorpha (Myctophiformes order), These orders do
not make up a natural group within the Euteleostei, but
they can be grouped ecologically since many stomiiform,
aulopiform, and myctophiform species are major components
of the meso- and epipelagic oceanic fauna. Some of
the species inhabit shallower and deeper areas. Taxonomic
and ecological knowledge of these groups in the Tropical
Eastern Pacific (TEP) Ocean has been gained mostly
through international oceanographic research expeditions
that have been undertaken since the late nineteenth century
-- Albatross (U.S.), Dana (Denmark), EASTROPAC
(various U.S., Central and South American ships), and
Russian expeditions aboard the Akademik Kurchatov,
Ob, Baikal, Lira and Proffesor Deryugii research vessels.
These expeditions have explored portions of the ocean
below 200 m, making knowledge accessible about deepsea
life that has not been recorded by any national agency
until date. Only a few studies of Colombian ichthyologists
have reported on species belonging to these orders (Sterling
1976, Rubio 1987, Beltrán-León & Rubio 1994). Rubio
(1987), for example, compiled information about the
distribution of many of the deep-sea fish species of the
Colombian Pacific, many of them without a collection register
in Colombian waters. Beltrán-León & Rios (2000)
documented the early stages of many groups of deep-sea
fishes in the Pacific, including several of the three orders
examined in this paper.
stomiiform fishes inhabit the epi- and mesopelagic realms.
They are generally less than five centimeters in length
and are distributed in tropical and subtropical waters
around the world (Nelson 2006). There are more than 300
species grouped into 50 genera (Moser & Watson 1996).
Several phylogenetic hypotheses have been proposed either
supporting or rejecting monophyly of the order and/or
component families (Schultz 1961, Weitzman 1967, 1974,
Fink & Weitzman 1984, Harold & Weitzman 1996, Harold
1993, 1998). Major morphological features of the order
include the presence of luminescent organs; big jaws;
and maxillary and premaxillary teeth. Some species have
a barbel on the ventral side of the mouth, and most of them
are dark brown, black and silver in color. There are four
families in the order (Gonostomatidae, Sternoptychidae,
Phosichthydae and Stomiidae), all of them occurring in
waters of the Colombian Pacific. Some authors consider
Gonostomatidae as the most abundant fish family in the
world (see Nelson 2006, Moyle & Chech 1988).
Initially grouped within the Myctophiformes (Gosline et al.
1996), aulopiform fishes were defined, by Rosen (1973), as
a new order that included all the non-Ctenosquamate eurypterygian
fishes. The order includes at least 15 families (see
Rosen 1973, Baldwin & Johnson 1996, Sato & Nakabo
2002), with several species represented in mesopelagic, bathypelagic
and demersal zones of the ocean. Considerable
morphological variation exists within the order, including
Biota Colombiana 7 (2), 2006
246- Stomiiform, Aulopiform and Myctophiforms from Colombian Pacifi c Castellanos-Galindo et al.
compressed and elongated bodies, large eyes and mouths
with large teeth (Watson 1996a). The mesopelagic aulopiform
families include Paralepididae, Omosudidae, Evermannellidae,
Scopelarchidae and Alepisauridae. Species of these
families are considered to be predators in their environment
and have essential roles inside trophic webs in their habitats
(Nelson 2006). Other families, including Chlorophthalmidae,
Aulopidae and Synodontidae live in benthic habitats in continental
shelves and shelf break zones, whereas the Ipnopidae
inhabit abyssal depths. Of the 15 aulopiform families, seven
of them are known to occur in waters of the Colombian Pacific
(Aulopidae, Chlorophthalmidae, Ipnopidae, Scopelarchidae,
Notosudidae, Synodontidae and Paralepididae), while
two other families (Alepisauridae and Evermannellidae)
have been captured in adjacent waters and are likely to also
be found in our territorial sea.
Myctophiform fishes are abundant in terms of numbers of
species and individuals living within pelagic zones of the
open ocean (Hulley 1995, Moser 1996a). Some classifications
have grouped them with aulopiforms; however,
myctophiforms lack the distinctive aulopiform arrangement
of pharyngobranchials and epibranchials (Rosen
Biota Colombiana 7 (2), 2006
1973, Nelson 2006). Most of these species live in waters
between 100-200 meters of depth, and undertake nightly
vertical migrations in the water column. They are an essential
part of a mass vertical migration in all oceans, referred
to as the Deep Scattering Layer. Myctophiforms are generally
small, have big eyes, and species-specific patterns of
photophores on the head and body. The order includes two
families, Myctophidae and Neoscopelidae, comprising
approximately 240 species and 30 genera worldwide, with
most of the species in the Myctophidae (lanternfishes). In
the Colombian Pacific there are approximately 31 species
of Myctophidae and one of Neoscopelidae.
Most of the specimens collected in the Panamian province
of the TEP are deposited in natural history museums
in the USA, Britain, Denmark and France. Our document
compiles information from those museums and references
where there are registers of stomiiform, aulopiform
and myctophiform species in Pacific Colombian waters.
Moreover, we include registers from adjacent waters to
highlight species that may be distributed in our territory,
but that, due to poor sampling efforts in deeper waters,
have not yet been collected.
Palabras Clave: Stomiiformes, Aulopiformes, Myctophiformes, Pacífico colombiano, peces de profundidad
L
Actinopterygii. Hacen parte de tres superórdenes, Stenopterygii
(Order Stomiiformes), Cyclosquamata (Order Aulopiformes),
y Scopelomorpha (Order Myctophiformes),
1967, 1974, Fink & Weitzman 1984, Harold & Weitzman
1996, Harold 1993, 1998).
oscuro, negro y plateado. Hacen parte del orden cuatro
familias (Gonostomatidae, Sternoptychidae, Phosichthydae
colombiano. Algunos autores consideran a las especies
de Gonostomatidae como las más abundantes del
mundo (ver Nelson 2006, Moyle & Chech 1988).
Rosen 1973, Baldwin & Johnson 1996, Sato & Nakabo
Otras familias,
incluyendo Chloropthalmidae, Aulopidae y Synodontidae
(Aulopidae, Chloropthalmidae, Ipnopidae, Sco-
Stomiiformes, Aulopiformes y Myctophiformes del Pacífico Colombiano -247
pelarchidae, Notosudidae, Synodontidae y Paralepididae),
colombiano.
This document presents a total of 97 species of Stomiiform, Aulopiform and Myctophiform fishes; 57 of them have confirmed
distribution in waters of the Colombian Pacific, and 40 are present in adjacent waters. These species are divided into
52 genera and 15 families, and most of the species (31) belong to the Myctophidae family. The Aulopidae, Evermanellidae,
Notosudidae and Neoscopelidae are represented by only one species each, in this area. Species in [ ] are those present
in adjacent waters of the Colombian Pacific. For those species, we provide coordinates for the locations where specimens
were caught and give the collection reference and catalog number of those specimens. All other species are shown with
their distribution in the Colombian Pacific ecoregions following INVEMAR (2000), their bathymetric range and the collection
catalog number and/or bibliographic reference. The organization of the taxonomic list follows Nelson (2006) at
the superorder, order and family levels, and the species within the families are presented in alphabetical order.
