OshKosh B'gosh company history timeline

1895

The agency advised them to adopt the tag "The Genuine Article Since 1895," on a blue and yellow patch that would adorn all of the company's products.

It was established in 1895 and is now headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

1898

In the summer of 1898, 1,500 Oshkosh woodworkers formed a union and launched a strike that lasted for 14 weeks.

1911

In 1911, William Pollack, the general manager of the then-Oshkosh Overall Company, heard the "Oshkosh B'Gosh!" punch line in a New York vaudeville routine and began tagging his company's overalls with it.

1937

The brand name became so successful that the company was renamed OshKosh B'Gosh, Inc. in 1937.

1962

The decision of mail order marketer Miles Kimball, an Oshkosh neighbor, to feature the company's child-sized bib overalls in one of its national catalogs in 1962 changed all that.

1965

The type used for the word “B’gosh” is still a handwritten one but it looks more like the script of the 1965 OshKosh B’gosh logo.

1968

On November 21, 1968, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was rocked by "Black Thursday" as protestors occupied the president's office demanding more black teachers, classes on African American history, black speakers on campus, and a black cultural center.

1974

In 1974 the company's sales of children's wear accounted for merely 5 percent of total sales.

1978

Wyman remained chairman of the board until he died in 1978.

1981

In 1981 the company opened a showroom on Seventh Avenue in New York City, the nerve center of the garment business.

From those roots, OshKosh began to develop its own chain of retail outlets in 1981.

1985

But even as the company opened new plants in non-union southern states, OshKosh B'Gosh continued to manufacture overalls in Oshkosh, where workers belonged to United Garment Workers of America Local 126, even opening a new factory there in 1985.

1987

In early 1987, Charles Hyde wrote to the company's shareholders that OshKosh was "monitoring very closely major changes taking place in the retail marketplace, changes which seem to be accelerating.

1989

Also in 1989, the company began to turn its attention towards diversification, both geographically and in terms of product offerings for both older and younger consumers.

1990

Based on the consultant's report, in 1990 the company added three new executive positions: president and chief operating officer; vice-president of human resources; and vice-president of management information systems.

1991

In 1991, the company put its succession plan into effect, moving Charles F. Hyde to the position of chairman and his son Douglas W. Hyde, who had been in charge of merchandising for 12 years, to the position of president and chief executive officer.

1992

In September of 1992, it completed the purchase of Poron, S. A.'s share of OshKosh B'Gosh Europe, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.

Wyman's son-in law, Charles F. Hyde, ran the company until his son, Douglas W. Hyde, took over as CEO in 1992.

1994

The company in 1994 opened flagship stores in both Paris and London to better showcase its product lines to the international audience.

1996

As a next step, the company introduced clothing for older children under the brand names Genuine Blues for boys and Genuine Girls in its company-owned stores in early 1997. Based on this response, OshKosh introduced apparel for older boys and girls in its Genuine Kids product line in 1996.

1997

During 1997 the company abandoned several business units that had underperformed.
