This is the true parrot cichlid, Hoplarchus psittacus. Not to be confused with those grotesque hybrids. Alan
Is it realy ?! One of the mystic species from my youth time. I Saw a picture of it when I was 10 years old and dicided this was my favorite fish species ! On the picure was a wild-caught specimen from the Rio Negro held in the hand by one of the collectors and was named Cichlasoma psittacus and told to be rare. The fish in the old magazine was however moregreenish with a red throath and also some red on the belly. If it realy is the Parrot cichlid this would be a lifer for me and the end of a quest which took 40 years ! Thank you very much for this gentle lemur !
Happy to help See the Fishbase page at Hoplarchus psittacus : fisheries, aquarium I have never photographed this species myself, and I can't recall ever seeing it (but it's possible that I have not noticed young ones in dealer's). It is quite unmistakeable - the only cichlids that look vaguely similar are the two species of Hypselecara but they have very different colouration. Alan
OK the one of your link realy is the same as the one I photographed and so : a lifer and the end of a 40-year old quest , again thank you gentle lemur !
