Planktonic in freshwater lakes, ponds, and reservoirs; also in potamoplankton, river floodplain lakes, and paddy fields; occasionally in river estuaries, athalassic oligosaline and coastal brackish waters; less common in bog ponds; prefers shallow waters of higher trophic degree, restricted to upper layers (epi-, metalimnion) in larger lakes; warm stenothermic, euryhaline.
