Welcome, fellow wanderers, to the enchanting land of Yangshuo, nestled amidst the breathtaking karst mountains in China.

Today, we embark on a journey back in time to discover the captivating history of the cormorant fishermen of Yangshuo. Prepare to be transported to an era where man and bird joined forces to conquer the rivers and leave an indelible mark on this picturesque corner of the world.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine ancient China, where rivers flowed freely, and nature thrived in all its glory. It is said that the art of cormorant fishing was born here over a thousand years ago. Picture this: as dusk gently settled upon the Li River, skilled fishermen would set sail with their loyal companions, the cormorants.

With sleek black feathers, webbed feet, sharp beaks, and longs neck that gracefully emerges from the water like a serpent, cormorants are skilled divers and expert fishers. These birds can plunge deep into the depths, using their powerful wings to propel themselves underwater in search of fish. Cormorants have an uncanny ability to swim swiftly and maneuver effortlessly beneath the surface, often catching their prey with astonishing precision.

A Symbiotic Bond Between Fisherman and Cormorant

Imagine yourself drifting along the Li River, surrounded by the moonlit peaks, as you witness this ancient spectacle unfold before your eyes. The rhythmic movements of the fishermen, standing tall on their bamboo rafts, guide their cormorant companions with a melodious whistle. The sight of the birds diving gracefully into the water, their silhouettes illuminated by lanterns, is nothing short of magical.

What sets cormorant fishing apart from other fishing techniques is the extraordinary bond between man and bird. These fishermen would skillfully train the cormorants to dive into the water and snatch fish with their sharp beaks, while ensuring that the larger catches were held gently in their throats, preventing them from being swallowed. The birds were then rewarded with their own catch, fostering a relationship built on trust and mutual respect.

Photographing a Disgruntled Cormorant Fisherman

One of my main photographic goals in China was to photograph the cormorant fishermen at work. This wish was granted during a nighttime boat ride, when the pilot pointed one out and asked if anyone wanted to wake up early and photograph them at sunrise. I quickly raised my hand.

While I love the cormorant fisherman photos I made that morning, I was disappointed by the experience. Yes, I understand that the fisherman was only putting on a paid show for me. But, he seemed quite grumpy and unwilling to offer more than the most basic experience. Then again, I might be grumpy too if I had to get up at the crack of dawn and pose for a foreigner.
