New England Seamounts Experiment (NESMA)

NESMA is an Office of Naval Research-funded study to understand sound propagation in the ocean. Specifically this fieldwork focuses on how the Gulf Stream interacts with a series of seamounts that can be found off of the continental shelf of the eastern United States. Understanding the complicated dynamics in the region has implications for how the ocean transports heat and dissipates its energy.

Location

Near the Atlantis II seamount approximately 700km SE from Cape Cod in the Atlantic Ocean.

Time

Pilot experiment in May 2023. Main experiment in August 2024.
