The machine begins the rhythm again.
Contingency explores the sonic fabric of colonial structures as embodied in the experience of the Ramallah-Jerusalem checkpoint Qalandia. Reflecting on sound as a spatial practice that produces its own field of potentialities the piece probes both the use of sound as an instrument of disciplinary power and as a site for its possible subversion. Critically examining how colonial practices of disciplining populations not only result in acts of resistance but paradoxically also elicit corresponding modes of self-disciplining by colonial subjects. Running across the tickers are fragments of these conversations and confrontations.
Using only sounds and dialogue recorded on location with hidden handheld devices the sonic language of the space is decoded and de-normalised. An intervention that denaturalises the soundscape to expose an unsettling surrealism and a kind of ‘science fiction’ that lurks at the heart of contemporary coloniality.

حقل من الضجيج، علينا أن نحافظ على النظام. قرقعة آلة بتردّد منخفض. جسد عالق في باب إلكتروني دوّار. تشويش. ذبذبة سمّاعات، صوت شخص خفي، أمر بالرجوع على الوراء.
تبدأ الآلة بالإيقاع مرّة أخرى.
يبحث "عارض" في النسيج الصوتي للهياكل الاستعماريّة التي تتجسّد في تجربة حاجز قلندية على الطريق بين رام الله والقدس. يتأمّل العمل في الصوت كممارسة مكانيّة تنتج حقل الإمكانيّات الخاصّ بها، ويسبرُ استخدام الصوت كأداة لسلطة التأديب، وكموقع محتمَل لتقويضها في آن واحد. يبحث العمل بشكل نقدي في الممارسات الاستعماريّة الهادفة إلى تأديب وضبط السكان، وفي المفارقة التي تكمن في أنّها لا تؤدّي إلى أفعال مقاومة فحسب، بل تؤدّي كذلك إلى ظهور أنماطٍ من الانضباط الذاتي لدى المستعمَرين. أمّا على الشاشات الرقميّة، فتظهر مقاطعَ من هذه الحوارات والمواجَهات.
يستخدم العمل فقط الصورة والحوار اللذَين تمّ تسجيلهما في الميدان بأجهزة يدويّة خفيّة، بحيث يجري فكّ شفرة اللغة الصوتيّة للمكان واسترجاع حقيقة أنَّها غير طبيعيّة. هو تدخّل يفضح هذا المشهد الصوتي غير الطبيعي، ويكشف عن حالة سورياليّة مقلقة وعن شكل من أشكال "الخيال العلمي" الذي يقع في قلب الكولونيالية المعاصرة.
