Teeny-tiny and ready to steal your heart!

Our newest Zoo baby is a rock star! A klipspringer was born to four-year-old mom Deborah around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15. The calf was sired by six-year-old Ajabu and weighed just 27.5 ounces at birth. He is the ninth klipspringer born at the Zoo.

Last Saturday, our veterinary staff performed a neonatal exam on the antelope, who appeared to be in good health and nursing well. The calf, who does not yet have a name, was determined to be a male. He will spend several weeks bonding with Deborah in a behind-the-scenes area before making his public debut.

Klipspringer—which weigh between 18 and 40 pounds as adults—are found in rocky areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Known for their surefootedness, klipspringers do not face any major threats but are sometimes hunted by humans for their meat and hide.
