This 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88 was purchased by a previous owner out of Rockford, Illinois in 2009, reportedly from the son of its original owner, and subsequently underwent cosmetic, mechanical, and modification work that was completed in 2016. The car has been refinished in metallic burgundy over a white interior, and power comes from a rebuilt 5.7-liter Vortec V8 featuring period-style accessories and backed by a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Additional modifications include air suspension, reproduction Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, a custom stereo, and more. This Super 88 hardtop kustom is offered by the selling dealer in Toronto, Ontario with period brochures and Illinois license plates, build receipts and photos, show awards, and an Ontario registration.

No Reserve: Modified 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88

The 88 rode on a 123″ wheelbase for 1960, with period advertising referring to the two-door hardtop model as a “Holiday Scenicoupe.” This example was delivered from the factory in black, and sheet metal was cut and welded to replace rusted areas before the body was repainted using eight coats of House of Kolor Pagan Gold and Brandywine Candy. A new windshield, side glass, weatherstripping, and window felts were added along with replacement taillight lenses. The bumpers were hand-fit and chrome trim was replated. Body modifications include:

  • Narrowed headlights with center emblems decked
  • Factory grille widened to accommodate new headlight position
  • Scripts and emblems shaved along with lower side trim and door locks
  • Handmade wing trim added to both quarter panels
  • Dummy 1959 Chevrolet roof vent added
  • Custom-fabricated filler panels on either side of the license plate
  • Reverse lights replaced with dummy exhaust vents
  • Rear bumperettes removed

Chrome 15″x6″ 56-spoke reproduction Kelsey-Hayes wheels wear Oldsmobile center decals and Coker Classic wide-whitewall radial tires. The frame and suspension components were media-blasted and finished in BASF Satin Black. Additional suspension and brake work included:

  • Control arm bushings, ball joints, sway bar links and bushings replaced
  • New and refurbished tie rods, drag link, idler arm, and Pitman arm fitted
  • Quick-ratio power steering box installed
  • Custom air-ride suspension fitted at all four corners
  • Brake drums machined and wheel cylinders, shoes, and springs replaced along with steel and flexible lines
  • New front wheel bearings installed

Originally trimmed in black and white, the cabin was fitted with sound deadener on the floors, firewall, and doors before burgundy loop carpeting with jute insulation backing was installed. The seats, side panels, armrests, and package tray were reupholstered in GM Alpine White vinyl using factory-style patterns. Interior modifications include:

  • 1964 Chevrolet white star-pattern vinyl headliner
  • Dash pad removed, dash filled and painted body color
  • Custom center console with air suspension controls and auxiliary gauges
  • 1959 Chevrolet armrests
  • Vintage-style Custom Autosound stereo with Bluetooth, Alpine amplifier, and Polk Audio 6″x9″ speakers

A two-spoke steering wheel frames two sets of ventilation controls as well as a 120-mph ribbon speedometer that has been modified to work with the replacement engine and houses a five-digit odometer showing 80k chassis miles. Total mileage is unknown. A a new heater core was fitted during the project, while the clock is noted as inoperable.

The trunk was also fitted with sound deadening material under a reproduction liner, and houses the compressor, reservoir, and manifolds for the air-ride system along with a body-colored 14″ spare wheel.

The gold-painted 5.7-liter Vortec V8 was reportedly sourced from a 1998 Chevrolet, and was rebuilt and modified with the following:

  • Comp Cams camshaft
  • Edelbrock 650 CFM carburetor on aluminum intake manifold
  • Headman headers
  • Edelbrock electric fuel pump
  • Custom aluminum radiator, high-flow water pump, and new cooling hoses
  • Mallory distributor
  • High-torque starter
  • Powermaster single-wire 12-volt alternator
  • Replacement power steering pump
  • Finned aluminum valve covers
  • Period Cadillac batwing air cleaner

No Reserve: Modified 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rebuilt GM 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. A mild shift kit and reinforced components are said to have been added along with a transmission cooler. Additional details include:

  • Dual exhaust system
  • Custom two-piece driveshaft with new bearing
  • Rebuilt open differential with new bearings, shims, and seals
  • Rear axle housing refinished and reinstalled with new bearings and seals
