  1. The mutation is a sudden heritable change in DNA sequence.
  2. The Mutation alters the genetic message carried by the gene.
  3. So mutation affects both phenotypes as well as genotypes in organisms.
  4. There are mainly 3 types of mutation namely deletion, substitutions, and insertions.
  5. Deletion mutation involves the loss of one or more nucleotides from a DNA segment.
  6. It can be a removal of one nucleotide or an entire piece of a chromosome.

Effect of a deletion mutation:

  1. Deletion mutation alters the function of the affected protein.
  2. Deletion mutation leads to congenital anomalies or birth defects and significant intellectual and physical disability.
  3. Examples of deletion mutations are cystic fibrosis and Williams syndrome.
  4. Turner syndrome is a partial or complete deletion of one of the X chromosomes in females.
