Archaeology Notes

HU42NW 2 4236 2664.

HU 423 266. Knowe of Wilga or Wulga. The remains of a chambered cairn lie on the top of a small outcrop knoll on the edge of a terrace on the steep moorland hillside between 550' and 600' OD with a wide view over the east side of the Shetland mainland. The cairn is very much ruined and robbed and is now overgrown with turf through which protrude a number of stones, most of which are obviously displaced. The diameter appears to be about 43' and over most of the site only a slight depth of the cairn material of large angular stones remains, though there is perhaps 3' of it on the east side where the ground drops sharply.

On the SE side a stell and a number of walls have been built against the cairn and have obscured its edge.

In the centre of the cairn was a number of earthfast stones, possibly the foundation course of a large chamber, varying in height from barely protruding to 2'3" high. There is no sign of an entrance passage.

A S Henshall 1963, visited 1957.

HU 4236 2666. As described and planned by Henshall.
