The anticipated spectacle of the Junkanoo Boxing Day Parade in New Providence, The Bahamas has unfortunately been postponed due to inclement weather.
In a Facebook post, the Junkanoo Corporation New Providence (JCNP) said festivities will now take place from 10 pm on December 26.
News of the delayed start of festivities did not go well with some Bahamians.
One Bahamian wrote on social media: “I feel like everyone should get Wednesday off or if they go to work they should receive double pay. Because why is Junkanoo, a big national event, starting on Tuesday at 10 pm and y’all expect people to go to work afterwards?”
Another person wrote: “Where can I get my refund because this is foolishness? How are people supposed to go to work on Wednesday after attending the event?”
The Junkanoo festival is one of the cornerstone events of Bahamian culture.
On Boxing Day and New Year's Day, hundreds of revellers from Junkanoo troops don brightly coloured costumes and parade Bay Street, in downtown Nassau.
The festival's origins aren’t clear but one of the leading theories is that it was birthed from celebrations by enslaved Africans, who were given three days off during the Christmas season.
