Common dolphinfish

A large fish reaching 1.8 meters in length. It is found both along the coast and offshore. Like the skipjack tuna and thunnus (tuna), it often swims beneath drifting wood and because of this they are often caught by fishermen. Adult males and females have different head shapes with the male having a more protruding angular head, and the female a rounder head. They are a popular aquarium fish. They are strong jumpers, and at times they will jump into another tank a few meters across from the one they are in. They are one of the popular species for lure fishing and are called manbika in the Okinawan dialect because their pull is so strong. They are a delicacy. In Japan, this fish is cheap, but in Hawaii it is considered a luxury and is called mahi-mahi.

Scientific name Coryphaena hippurus
