Philips Genie 18W compact fluorescent light globes (CFL)

Philips Genie 18W compact fluorescent light globes (CFL)

Object No. 2013/112/1

These compact fluorescent light bulbs consume five times less energy and last for up to eight times longer than old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs. Each bulb uses only 18W of energy to provide the same amount of light as a traditional 100W incandescent bulb. Lighting is a major consumer of energy in the household. Installing just one of these bulbs can save you up to $50 on energy bills over its lifetime. Because 90% of our electricity comes from burning coal, it also prevents the release of half a tonne of greenhouse gas. In 2009 the use of traditional 'tear shaped' incandescent globes were phased out in Australia. Compact fluorescent globes like these Philips Genie lamps found widespread use and represent this transition to more energy efficient lighting. Angelique Hutchison Curator 2013
