Summary[edit]

Description

Cladonia didyma (Fée) Vainio

Image location: Sewanee, Franklin Co., Tennessee, USA

Location: 35°13’21.51"N, 85°57’3.86"W, el. 572 m, Rutledge Point Trail.

Substrate and habitat: Growing on thin, sandy soil covering a nearly completely decomposed log, almost level with the forest floor, in oak-dominated eastern deciduous woodland near the western rim of the Cumberland Plateau.

Chemistry: podetia: K+ yellow (press damp K+ yellow area against white, absorbent paper for a better read), Pd+ bright yellow immediately (on the undersides of flaring podetial squamules, becoming deep orange along the undersides of outer podetial squamule margins at junction with upper cortex). However, several podetia showed no such chemical reactions.

Identification: The podetia of Cladonia didyma are covered with granular to flaring squamules, sometimes enclosing irregular, elongate, pale to brownish, ecorticate patches; thallus squamules are finely incised and esorediate (Hinds and Hinds, 2005, p.179). In Cladonia macilenta the podetia have “well-developed farinose soredia” and the thallus squamules are sorediate (Harris and Ladd, 2005, p.97).
