Summary[edit]

Description

View once over the fence

Most people travelling the length of Loch Ness do so on the A82 road, passing through the village of Drumnadrochit (Gaelic "Druim na Droichaid" - ridge of the bridge). If however, instead of continuing on the A82 northwards you turn left at Drumnadrochit, a whole vista of Highland scenery awaits you. You can continue up the A831 to Cannich, and thencedown Strathglass to Beauly, or simply go up the A831 a mile or so the Milton and then take a right turn on to the A833 road over Culnakirk (G. "cul na circ" - back land of the hen). It's quite steep and winding climb up to the summit but you do seem to enter another world of hills, undulating moors and lochs. The last one before you enter the "hidden valley" that is the fertile and sheltered Glen Convinth, is a wee loch barely visible from the roadside. There is however a VERY rough small layby, and it is worth parking up and straddling the well-used fence to enjoy this wee loch, Loch na Ba Ruaidhe. It is in a sheltered hollow, and an idyllic setting which at some time in the past clearly supported a family - the patches of green tend to indicate where habitation and cultivation once took place - whose present location is maybe somewhere in North America.

It's a lovely spot but, sheltered as it may be, it would be no picnic to live here in the wild of a scottish winter, and getting supplies from the village in the pre-automobile days would have been some effort.
