Who Plays Dabby On ‘Disjointed’?

Disjointed is a show packed with scene-stealers, not all of them human! Obviously there’s the legendary Kathy Bates, who can’t help but draw attention because she’s Kathy f’ing Bates. There are also the animated trip sequences and the show’s wild commercial parodies, which literally steal screen time from the show’s live-action plots. Hell, Disjointed is a show that at times features the “physical” manifestation of weed (manifested as a sexy lady) and a maniacal weed-tending robot named Biowave. There’s a lot going on!

But of all those scene-stealers, none are as scene-stealy as frequent customers/internet superstars Dank and Dabby. Played by Chris Redd and Betsy Sodaro, these two entrepreneurial potheads frequently open up the show with excerpts from their hella popular weed webseries (or, in the case of Part 2’s premiere “4/20 Fantasy,” an elaborate musical number). Dank and Dabby are classic kooky sitcom characters, differentiated from the Phoebe’s and Cody’s of the genre by the fact that they are unapologetically and bluntly stoned out of their minds at all times!

Chris “Dank” Redd has seen his profile increase since the first half of Disjointed dropped in August as he’s since become a featured player on Saturday Night Live. But what about Dabby, his boisterous other half who packs a pot-fueled punch while Dank remains chiiiiiiill?

As I said before, Dabby is played by Betsy Sodaro, a veteran of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles who has popped up in a ton of supporting roles in plenty of shows you have definitely seen before. She’s been on plenty of improv and sketch teams at the UCB, where she honed her aggressively quirky performing style, and can currently be seen in the shows Bangarang! Presents: The Weekend and Search History (where she sometimes performs alongside MTV’s Nicole Byer and The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden).

Sodaro first gained national attention back in 2012 as part of the cast of NBC’s short-lived sitcom Animal Practice. She then popped up in guest spots on Adult Swim’s NTSF:SD:SUV, Fox’s Raising Hope, and CBS’ The Millers. From there, the guest spots keep on coming: 2 Broke Girls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Adam Ruins Everything, Girlboss, etc. She also logged recurring roles on Another Period, Superstore, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Dr. Ken, and Lady Dynamite. And if her voice sounds familiar, that’s because you’ve heard it on All Hail King Julien (where she voices Xixi) and Right Now Kapow (where she voices Plant).

But if you’re wondering what some solo Dabby action would look like, a series where Sodaro’s specific strain of stoner humor takes focus, then you have to check out her 2016 UCB Comedy webseries Mother Mary. In the show, Sodaro plays a celibate stoner who discovers she is pregnant with the second coming.

And of course you can see Sodaro on Disjointed, the show that has so far made the most of her comedic talents with a character tailor made for her. Sodaro’s been stealing the spotlight on sitcoms for a while, and Disjointed gives her a chance to shine.
