BURGHEAD,
DUFFUS, HOPEMAN, CUMMINGSTON, NEW DUFFUS, ROSEISLE, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
BURGHEAD is a fishing village, situated on a bold head and jutting
out into the Moray Frith, in the parish of Duff us, 9 miles w. from
Elgin, and about 10 n.e. from Forres. It possesses a fine pier, and a
safe and commodious harbour, well protected from the north and east
winds ; at high water steam or other vessels may enter with perfect
safety. This was anciently a Roman as well as Danish station ; there-
mains of a fort of the latter nation are still visible, also a well dug out
of the solid rock, which is known by the name of the Roman well. The
occupation of the inhabitants is fishing for salmon, herring, and cod.
There is also a chemical works, at which there are a number of people
employed. The vessels belonging to this place land goods here for the
surrounding country. In the parish is an Established church, together
with a chapel of ease at Burghead, where there are also a Free church,
a United Presbyterian church, and a public school. Population in 1881,
1,428.
Duffus parish extends along the shore of the Moray Frith to the
north of Elgin, from which the church is about five miles distant. The
parish is about 6 miles in length, by about 3 in breadth, and contains
9,475 acres. The villages of Roseisle, Hopeman, Cummingston, and
New Duffus are all within the parish, the population of which in 1881
was 3,985.
Cummingston is a small village, situated on the road midway between
Burghead and Hopeman, and almost without any trade.
Hopeman is a village situated 2 miles e. of Burghead, on the coast of
the Moray Frith. It possesses a neat harbour, but the shipping of the
port is not extensive. There is a Free church here.
