Description

Specimen consisting of massive pyrite, limonite and quartz.

The old, stamp-like label (with original glue on the backside) means:
"IV Klasse: Schwefelmetalle, 2 Oxdy. 1. Gr. b. Kiese, Pyrit, goldhaltiger Schwefelkies & Arsenikkies, ??? in Brasilien". "Schwefelkies" is an old german synonym for pyrite, "Arsenikkies" is a synonym for arsenopyrite, german "Kiese" mean sulphide minerals in general. Unfortunately the exact locality is not really readable, I would interprete it as St. Rosa?

As the pyrite is described as "goldhaltig" (auriferous) on the label, I searched for free gold with a loupe. On the 3rd picture, there MAYBE a tiny speck of gold in the quartz grains near the center, but it is difficult to distinguish from the sulphides. If auriferous pyrite oxidises completely to limonite, one often finds tiny gold blebs in the limonite, like in the specimen LGM503417 in this auction.
