Azerbaijani artist Surayya Mughanli first caught Oregon Contemporary's eye when she was featured in The Success Story of Remaining Invisible: Two Truth and a Lie, an experimental documentary film that "blurs the line between real and invented stories." The Unfading Light of Primordiality is Mughanli's first international solo show, highlighting the indelible mark that the eruption of war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the '90s left on her practice. Mughanli has since worked for decades as the director of the History and Ethnography Museum of the Saatly District in Azerbaijan and translates her love of the place into large-scale oil paintings, drawings, and layered works linked to Nikola Tesla, ancient pre-Islamic cults, and the medieval poet Nasimi.
