Sum 41's Deryck Whibley talks sobriety, confirms he's 'halfway through a record'

A year ago, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was fighting for his life, battling liver and kidney failure due to longtime alcohol abuse. He was placed in a medically induced coma for a week to handle withdrawals.

Now? He’s turned it all around. “I’m feeling better than I’ve ever felt. I’m healthier. I’m in the best shape of my life,” he tells Vice in a piece published Tuesday. “I’m more productive. Well, I was always really productive, but I was just good at being a functional alcoholic.”

The interview spans myriad topics. Whibley says he spends “80 percent” of his day engaging in physical therapy and admits he cannot walk normally yet. The band will record an album later this month, per Vice, and the 35-year-old says he’s “halfway through a record” now.

Touring currently concerns him to a degree, but it sounds like priorities are properly aligned in his life: “I don’t even want to drink again anyway. If I literally hadn’t done it to death, I might feel like I’ll be missing something, but I’m not missing anything. I’m done with it. I’ve definitely had enough and it’s not even really that fun.”
