The Buccaneer Palm is a rare and beautiful palm tree that is native to southern Florida, the northern Caribbean and Central America. It has a slightly swollen, ringed trunk, arching, dark grayish-green leaves and a waxy crownshaft. The trunk is variable in form. It may be crooked or leaning or nearly straight. It is swollen at the base and may be cylindrical or swollen farther up the stem or it may be slightly bottle-shaped, like that of a royal palm. The trunk is smooth, waxy and blue-green, grayish-green, light gray or yellowish in color and the crownshaft is blue-green or grayish green and slightly swollen. The variability in the form of the trunk is part of the charm of this native plant. It has panicles of light green flowers that emerge among the leaf bases. Fruits are bright red and unlobed or with 2 or 3 rounded lobes. It is also known as the Cherry palm for its red, globose, cherry-like fruits. It is valued for its many characters, the colorful and variable trunk, the blue-green color of its leaves, its clusters of red fruits and its rarity. It grows in coastal areas and is one of the most salt and wind tolerant of all palms. Grows in almost any well-drained soil and is cultivated in subtropical and tropical regions especially in coastal areas. In Florida it is cultivated in central and southern Florida, from the Orlando area to the Florida Keys. It is used as an ornamental plant and as a specimen plant and it is valued by plant collectors. It is now endangered in most of its native habitat and is also relatively rare in cultivation. Large individuals of the Buccaneer Palm are prized garden specimens. Even small plants fetch good prices in the nursery trade, and it is hoped that this fabulous and unusual palm will be a little more commonly cultivated in the future.
Growing Instructions
1. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours.
2. Fill several pots with a mix of half milled peat moss or potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Prepare one pot for each seed.
3. Sow the seeds on the soil.
4. Cover the seeds with a layer of soil that is ½ inch thick.
5. Put the pots in a warm, sunny area and water them.
6. The seeds sprout in 2 months.
7. When the seedlings have 2 or 3 leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors.
