Daemon wrote:inveigh(verb) To give vent to angry disapproval; protest vehemently. Synonyms: rail Quote:To Rail at, Inveigh againſt
To rail at any one, is to uſe abuſive, or offenſive words. To inveigh againſt a perſon, or thing, is to throw out invectives againſt them. Railing, then, conſiſts particularly in the terms; inveighing, in the things and manner.
Invectives, thrown out in cold blood, are more cutting, and more humiliating, than long and bitter railing.
A man, who reſpects himſelf, never rails; but violently irritated, he inveighs with dignity. Groſs abuſe, and violent railing, is never heard from the tongue of a noble mind; but invective is a fire kindled in a great heart, and which rather purifies the lips, than ſullies them.
We rail only at perſons; but inveigh againſt things, as well as perſons; againſt vices, againſt abuſes, againſt morals.
Defamatory libels often rail horribly at individuals. Satire, generally, inveighs ſtrongly againſt corruption.
Railing indicates a kind of injuſtice, a thing contrary to right; which inveighing does not; but, on the contrary, ſpeaks with truth.
