Mycelium partly superficial, forming black strands on the surface of the host lichen, irregular and variable in thickness but not much branched.
Anamorph: presumed Phaeococcomyces-like conidia present, 7-9 µm diam., of clusters of 2-4 (-5) globose cells 3.5-4 µm diam., thick-walled, smooth and golden brown.
Teleomorph: ascomata 50-200 µm long and 30-60 µm broad, elongate, superficial, black, formed from intercalary thickenings of vegetative hyphae, peridium thick, composed of dark brown ± globose cells 4-5 µm diam., with an inner colourless layer. Interascal tissue not present. Asci few, 20-25 x 15-18 µm, subglobose to broadly ovoid. 8-spored. Ascospores (9-) 10-13 x 6-8.5 µm, broadly obovoid, 1-septate, slightly constricted at the septum, colourless with a distinct gelatinous perispore when young, becoming brown and finely granular at maturity.
