Rider Athletics Hall of Fame
Became the only player in Rider basketball history to reach the professional ranks. He was signed by the old Baltimore Bullets of the NBA in 1948. Before leaving Rider, Kay scored a school record of 367 points in 1945. During the 1947-48 season, Kay led Rider to a 15-6 record, the most victories for a Rider College team in 17 years. Former coach Tom Leyden compared him to former NBA star Bill Bradley. In 1948, Kay went on to earn All-American honors. Following his NBA season, Kay went on to play professionally with the Trenton Tigers of the American Basketball League, performing before local fans at the old Trenton Arena. "Herbert was a graceful, left-handed shooter who possessed great leaping ability, if he would have played today, he'd still be an All-American," said Tom Leyden.
