Carex vulpinoidea is native to a wide range of habitats, such as wet meadows, marshes, ditches, prairies, and fields. This competitive, widespread sedge is found throughout North America but is most common in the eastern half. This sedge is adaptable. Occurs in seasonally wet or flooded soils in open habitats, wet meadows, marshes, and roadside ditches. Its uses include bioremediation, erosion control, naturalizing, rain gardens, storm water basins and the edges of marshes, springs, lakes and ponds. Although it thrives in full sun, it also grows in the filtered shade of moist woods. It forms an arching, tufted shape with green, fine-textured leaves and is recognized by its green, swirling seed clusters. This sedge provides habitat and cover for wildlife and is a host plant for several Skipper butterflies. While it is acknowledged as a fine solution to landscape problems, it can also serve as an anchor in traditional landscapes and looks great hanging over a rock wall near a water feature. This plant can spread rapidly and colonize under ideal conditions.
