Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: What Are the Differences?

Two of the most popular and well-known dog breeds are the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever. These dogs are known for their friendly and affectionate nature, however, they're very different dogs in several ways. Want to know the differences between Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever breeds? Let’s find out!

Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: Origins

Golden Retrievers have their origins in Scotland, whereas Labradors originate from Newfoundland in Canada.

Golden Retrievers originated in Scotland in the mid-19th century, where they were bred for hunting, specifically for retrieving game birds. They were brought over to America at the start of the 20th century, with their beautiful golden coats and friendly disposition quickly making them popular as family pets.

Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, have their origins in Newfoundland, Canada. Bred from the now extinct St. John's Water Dog, they were used by fishermen to catch ducks before being taken to England, where the Labrador Retriever breed was further developed into the breed we know and love today.

Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: Appearance

Whilst both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are medium to large-sized dogs, there are key differences in their appearance:

Coat

Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful, long, and flowing golden coats, whereas Labrador Retrievers have a short coat. Both breeds shed and need to be brushed regularly.

Color

Whilst the coat color of Goldens is, unsurprisingly, golden in various shades, ranging from light cream to dark golden, Labradors have 3 coat colors - yellow, chocolate, and black.

Build

Golden Retrievers have a sturdy and well-proportioned build with a feathery tail, whereas Labradors have a more athletic and muscular build, with an otter-like tail.

They're very similar in terms of average height, with goldens typically measuring 21.5-24 inches tall at the shoulder, and Labradors measuring 21.5-24.5 inches in height.

Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: Temperament

Both breeds share a friendly and outgoing nature, but there are subtle differences in their temperaments.

Golden Retrievers are renowned for their affectionate and people-oriented personality. They thrive on human interaction and are often described as "velcro dogs" because they love being close to their owners. They are generally gentle and patient, which makes them excellent family pets, especially with children. Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them easy to train.

Labradors are known for their high energy levels. They're always up for a game of fetch or a long walk, making them great companions for active individuals or families. They tend to be more outgoing and less reserved compared to Golden Retrievers. Similarly to Goldens, Labradors are easy to train.

Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: Exercise Needs

Both Goldens and Labs require plenty of daily exercise, so it's crucial to bear this in mind if you're thinking of getting a new dog

It's worth noting that whilst both breeds need regular exercise, Labradors are the most energetic out of the two and have higher exercise needs.

Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever: Health Considerations

Both Goldens and Labradors are susceptible to certain health issues, including elbow and hip dysplasia, certain heart and eye conditions. They can also experience life-threatening bloat - this is rare but it's worth knowing the symptoms.

Young adult Labs can experience exercise-induced collapse (EIC) - breeders are encouraged to do a DNA test to prevent the gene from being carried to more dogs.

So, whilst Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are similar dogs in some ways, they also have many differences, particularly in terms of appearance. One thing's for sure, both breeds are loyal, friendly companions that make great family pets.
