MEET THE STAFF

Krista Hayes - LL@RH Program Supervisor: After two years in this role, Krista continues to thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to guide this growing program and to provide meaningful experiences for all participants. One of her favorite aspects of the program is watching friendships grow amid the warm and inclusive community of LL@RH.

Emily Prosser - LL@RH Program Assistant: Emily joined the PRT team at the beginning of the summer, although she had her first experience with LL@RH as a facilitator in the spring. Emily is also an integrative health coach, and she fully supports every component of LL@RH for what it provides to the overall health of the participants.

OVERVIEW:

Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill (LL@RH) – Where Curiosity Never Retires – is an inclusive community of adults, age 50+, who share knowledge through unique educational opportunities and local excursions. Each semester, outstanding volunteer facilitators provide programs covering a range of engaging topics, experiences and skills related to personal growth, enrichment and more. The only prerequisite is a curiosity to learn!

REGISTRATION:

Registration begins Monday, August 28, 2023 (see times below). All adults 50+ in the community are welcome to participate in these exciting educational opportunities.

There are THREE easy ways to register:

1. Register Online (beginning at 11 AM on Aug. 28) – Visit cityofrockhill.com/lifelonglearning and select the “PROGRAM REGISTRATION” icon. See page 46 for complete online registration instructions.

2. Register In-Person – Attend the Fall Semester Kickoff Social on Monday, Aug. 28, 9:30 - 11:30 AM (see page 2). *REGISTRATION OPENS AT 11 AM!

3. Register By Phone (beginning at 1:30 PM on Aug. 28 and thereafter) – Call 803-329-5527 or 803325-2568 to register by phone.

REFUND POLICY:

Refunds will be given up to seven days before a program starts. After that, refunds will not be provided. To request a refund, please email the LL@RH Coordinator: lifelonglearning@ cityofrockhill.com.

WAITLIST POLICY:

Due to their popularity, LL@RH programs reach capacity quickly. Registration limits are set by facilitator’s preference or space availability. Do not be discouraged by a waitlist! Instead, see the list as a tool for communicating a request for more seats in a program or for scheduling an additional section of the program, if possible. Adding your name to a waitlist is the most effective way to communicate this demand! Any openings that become available will go to individuals in the order in which they are entered on the waitlist. Waitlist communications may come directly from LL@RH staff OR as an autogenerated email from the City of Rock Hill with the subject: Waitlist Notification. You must respond to this notification within 24 hours to secure your spot in the program. With over 60 programs open for registration, be prepared with second and third choice options when you register.

CANCELATIONS:

All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. If the minimum enrollment is not met one week prior to the start date, the program will be canceled, and fees will be promptly refunded. If a cancelation of any program must occur, such communication will come via email or phone call.

COMMUNICATION:

When you register for Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill, you will automatically be added to the LL@RH email list. If you do not plan to register for courses this semester but want to stay connected with LL@ RH, please visit cityofrockhill.com/stayconnected. Once you submit your email address, please be sure to select “Lifelong Learning” under the Parks, Recreation & Tourism dropdown menu. You can also make additional selections to stay in the know about many of the City’s fantastic offerings!

PROGRAM DURATION:

Programs range from 60-90 minutes per session. For programs requiring longer classes, it is noted in the description.

LOCATION:

Most programs are held at Northside Recreation Center: 900 Annafrel Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730. If programs occur elsewhere, it will be noted in the description.

PCLASSROOMS & PARKING:

The number of registrants per program dictates its classroom. You will be contacted by email approximately one week before the start of your program with the specific meeting room and information as to which parking lot at Northside Recreation Center (upper or lower) is most convenient.

This program will allow you to learn from different organizations each week as they highlight the role they play in making a difference in this good town. They will also share the many ways that great people are needed to continue to make a difference. If you are looking for new ways to volunteer your time, have found yourself uncertain as to how to get involved or simply want to be better informed of meaningful happenings in the community, this course is for you!

Get to know the basic questions in French when traveling abroad ... and some of the answers. This course is designed to open you to a world of ideas and to offer an opportunity for lively listening and communication.

INTRODUCTION TO WATER AEROBICS

4 Weeks: $30 (non-member YMCA) ; Limit: 25

Take the plunge and try this low-impact workout that builds muscle strength and boosts your energy. The instructor will lead you through a series of moves using noodles, weights and other provided equipment. The buoyancy of the water is easy on your joints, which makes water aerobics a good choice if you have joint problems, chronic pain or are recovering from an injury. This course will be held in the shallow, warm pool at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center. This course is open to nonmembers of the YMCA who want to try the class before committing to membership. *If you are a YMCA member and interested in this course, please contact the LL@RH staff prior to registration.

MURDER MYSTERY CLUB

MONDAYS, 1 PM, Sept. 11 - Oct. 2

4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 15

This course shows you how to move from solitary reading of mystery stories or binge-watching of detective shows to interactively solving (fake) crimes with family and friends. We will work through a fictitious case using a pre-packaged collection of investigation documents and physical evidence items. We’ll learn to identify the weapon, develop a timeline, test alibis, crack ciphers, figure out who is innocent and decide "who dun it." We’ll also talk about related board games, mystery puzzles, letters from Sherlock Holmes, and even hosting or attending Murder Mystery Dinners or Weekends.

LL@RH is financed and programmed through the City of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department. Registration fees and sponsorships also help offset expenses. ORAL READING INTERPRETATION

Have you ever been asked to read something aloud in front of others? It can be frightful. We’ll take passages from scripts, books, stories, the Bible, etc. and try to interpret them in an oral fashion. We will also work with voice projection. We might make actors of you yet!

GET TO KNOW LARRY WINELAND

Larry is a retired instructor of French with 33+ years in secondary education and 12 years as an adjunct instructor at Messiah College and Dickinson College (both in Pennsylvania). Larry was also a theatre director for over 30 years where he taught Oral Interpretation and Speech. He has also been involved with community theatre groups in PA and Summerville, SC. Larry learned about LL@RH before the spring semester, and after participating in a few programs decided to give back as a facilitator. We are delighted to have Larry on board this semester as he provides new content and experiences for the program!

LIFELONG LEARNING @ ROCK HILL SALON

Salons date from the Age of Enlightenment (16851815) in Italy and France. Based on the French word for living room, salons were gatherings of intellectuals, artists and politicians – often led by women – who gathered in an intimate setting to discuss poetry, literature and current events. Salons remain popular today throughout the world.

Ideas take center stage in a salon, giving participants equal opportunity to read, learn, think and engage in a lively exchange.

We will delve into a series of articles and excerpts (one per class), spanning a variety of nonfiction topics. Assigned articles will cover such topics as how market values play an increasing role in our lives; consideration of the role and character of community in a flourishing society; and more.

Bridget is a South Carolina licensed attorney focusing in the areas of Estate Planning and Elder Law. Her firm is in Rock Hill. Prior to becoming an attorney, she worked as a Lead Paralegal and Legal Administrator for an Estate Planning and Elder Law firm in Massachusetts for 18 years. She has dedicated her career to helping families and their loved ones understand the importance of proper estate planning. She started the Estate Preservation Law Firm in 2022 with the mission of helping individuals and families find their unique path to lifelong protection and peace of mind. Pat Grant returns to share about the complicated making of York County and Rock Hill and the coming of the railroads. In addition to Pat, guest speakers include: to Dawn Johnson of Rock Hill’s African American Cultural Resources Advisory Committee, speaking on the contributions of African-Americans to the growth and development of Rock Hill; Leila Roddey Hicklin telling about the involvement of the Roddey Family in the building of our town; Chip Hutchison sharing about the great life of Ann Hutchison White; and Gary Williams identifying and celebrating the new and restored buildings around town.

Photography is one of the creative arts which can stimulate our imagination, our curiosity and our creativity. It can also lead us to prayer and deeper reflection, wonder, awe and self-knowledge. This workshop is for amateur photographers - folks who do photography for the pleasure of doing it. Participants do not need any special or expensive equipment - only a simple camera or a phone that has a camera.

CLINTON ConNEXTion ACTION PLAN (CCAP)

This course continues to repeat as those who have taken it-as well as those who lead it-emphasize its importance and meaningful impact. The Clinton ConNEXTion Action Plan is a strategy and movement for the revitalization and redevelopment of South Rock Hill. Participants can expect to explore the vision and discuss strategies to move the community forward. This course will include a guided bus tour (Week 2).

HUMAN GENETICS 101 AND BEYOND

The course will begin with an overview of the basics of human genetics: What are chromosomes? What are DNA and RNA? What are genes? What are the different modes of inheritance? Once students have a background of the principles of genetics, the course will cover human disorders, which do not follow these principles. Dr. Schwartz will outline the procedures used to identify genes associated with human disease providing examples from his research. Lastly, he will utilize his experience studying intellectual disability, autism and birth defects to present examples of the complexities of human genetics. Recent studies have revealed that we still have a lot to learn.

BEGINNING UKULELE

THURSDAYS, 1 PM, Oct. 19 - Nov. 9

4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 10

Learn the basic skills necessary for playing Ukulele. Accompany yourself, others or even lead singalongs. This is a very basic beginning course. No previous experience is required. As a bonus, research has shown that learning to play a musical instrument may help stave off the advancement of dementia. But the best reason to learn is that playing the Ukulele is just plain fun! It’s hard to play a Ukulele without smiling. So come get your grin on. *You must provide your own instrument.

BASIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN I

Landscaping is quite the art but knowing where to begin can prove challenging. Participants will learn the basics of landscaping to apply at home. This is not a hands-on class but is a prerequisite for registering for Basic Landscape Design II.

BASIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN II

This workshop is for those who have taken Basic Landscape Design I, either previously or doing so this semester. You will only register for one of the offered dates. Prior to this workshop you will provide pictures of your landscaping situation in order to receive guidance for addressing specific situations.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE? NOW WHAT?!

Have you ever wondered how Artificial Intelligence (AI) works? In this workshop, we will explore the basics of AI, from its history to its current state. We will also learn how to use Google’s AI tool Bard, a large language model that can generate text, translate languages and write customized reports. Bard can help us with all aspects of the AI development process, from brainstorming ideas to writing code and testing applications. By the end of this workshop, you will have a better understanding of AI and be able to use it to create your own amazing applications. We will also decipher this description to determine how much of it was actually written by Bard!

FALL PLANTING, PRUNING & MAINTENANCE

Fall is the time for planting shrubs, pruning and preparing plants for winter. This workshop will consist of a demo on how to correctly plant shrubs, how to prune shrubs and trees and how to perform general maintenance on your plants. Come prepared to get dirty in this workshop!

LEARN TO MAKE COCKTAILS

Fee: $5 (Paid directly to OTKC on 10/23); Seats: 40 Join Old Town Kitchen & Cocktail’s mixologist Bob Peters as he teaches you how to prepare three unique cocktails. Mr. Peters is an award-winning cocktail artisan. You do not want to miss this fun opportunity to learn from him! This workshop will be hosted at Old Town Kitchen & Cocktails who will also provide a light buffet of finger foods. You must register for this event to reserve your seat, but payment will be due to the restaurant on the day of the event.

CIVILIAN RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER EVENTS

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event.

In this class you will practice basic handbuilt pottery skills while making a seasonal decorative item. You will be able to choose from several different design options such as platters, bowls or other home/ seasonal décor pieces. You will explore different textures, tools and glaze options for your finished piece. All bowls and platters will be food safe. This class will be at Boyd Hill Recreation Center.

ALCOHOL INK LANDSCAPES

Alcohol ink has very vibrant colors and provides interesting effects when used on slick surfaces. In this class we will paint landscapes on Yupo paper and tiles.

HAND STAMPED GREETING CARDS

Class + Materials fee: $10; Seats: 10 per class

Do you love to send greeting cards? Register for one of these classes to make various cards using stamps, ink and paper. A card example will be provided and all pieces for the card will be precut for you. All you will need to do is stamp the image and put it together. Regardless of your level of creativity, this fun card making class is for you!

COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND THE NEW SOUTH, 1888-1926

Even many diehard fans may not be aware of the hardscrabble origins of southern college football. What a low-budget enterprise it was, how bad southern teams were compared to those in the North, and how most southerners were either opposed to or indifferent about it. This presentation will sketch the growth of the southern game from this early lack of promise to its coming of age in the 1920s, link that with the development of the South and share some surprising stories in the process.

LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF ELLIOTT WHITE SPRINGS

Elliott White Springs, a native South Carolinian born in Lancaster in 1896 was “a man of so many talents that it would be difficult to choose any one of his accomplishments as his most outstanding.” At his death in 1959, he was chairman of Springs Cotton Mills, one of the textile industry’s major success stories. He was the creative genius behind the innovative series of amusing, racy ads that made Springmaid sheets a household word and changed the course of American advertising. He was a leading philanthropist, founding the Springs Foundation, Inc. in 1942 that provided college loans, scholarships and aid to local schools, churches and youth programs. Springs’ success is due in part to his creative genius, or as one person put it, “to his panache for living and his visionary ideology.”

CATAWBA POTTERY & NATIVE AMERICANS IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Catawba Indian pottery is the oldest, continuous pottery tradition in North America. For millennia, indigenous potters around the Catawba River have been making ceramics from local clay and producing pieces in the traditional manner. While the number of potters is not huge, the artform deserves greater attention and recognition. For the best potters, the artform allows for individual expression while maintaining strict adherence to traditional techniques. This talk will offer an overview of the Catawba Nation pottery tradition, including its history, cultural contexts, prominent artists, and manufacturing techniques.

Dr. Stephen Criswell is the Director of Native American Studies and a Professor of English and Folklore at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. He earned his B.A from Belmont Abbey College, his M.A. from UNC Charlotte, and his Ph.D. from the University of Louisiana.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a heterogeneous collection of neurodevelopmental disorders which are relatively common. With a rise in the prevalence of ASD, there has been an increase in interest in identifying both biomarkers and the causation for ASDs. In the program, Dr. Schwartz will lead you through some of the latest findings regarding ASDs and the complexities associated with them.

On July 1, 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules changed to allow college athletes to make money off of their name, image and likenesses (NIL), reversing the organization’s long-held policy regarding amateurism and financial compensation. A MIRACLE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY— CELANESE CELRIVER PLANT: 1947-2005

The vibrant riverfront community called Riverwalk was once a vibrant manufacturing community called Celriver, or, as the locals called it, “The Celanese.” Celriver was the first chemical fiber plant built in South Carolina and one of the largest synthetic fiber facilities in the country. “The Celanese” will be presented as a true miracle of modern technology! This program will meet at the Rock Hill Velodrome building and will conclude with visiting the adjacent Celriver Legacy Plaza.

The Pennies for Progress Program began in 1997 and has completed some of the largest and most impactful transportation projects in York County over the past 25 years. The program is closing in on $1 billion spent on transportation improvements in York County since 1997. This interactive seminar will discuss the state law that pertains to the program, the history of the program, where the funding comes from and updates on current projects.

HOLOCAUST HIDDEN CHILD: ONE SURVIVOR’S STORY

Ms. Wertheim shares her mother’s miraculous story of survival that began at the age of 7, immediately after Kristallnacht. It ended 7 years later when she was reunited with some of her family. Ms. Wertheim’s presentation includes a brief review of the history leading up to the beginning of Nazism in Germany and includes artifacts (her mother’s wartime clothing, photographs and letters).

LEVY DEAS AND THE FIGHT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

From Rock Hill’s founding in 1871, wastes in downtown Rock Hill were discharged into small waterways leading to Fishing Creek, a stream located a few miles southwest of Rock Hill. Farmers near the creek complained of horrible odors, dead fish, diseased livestock, deformed waterfowl and other maladies associated with a seriously polluted stream. From this presentation you will learn how a group of rural farmers challenged local businesses and the government in one of York County’s most celebrated civil trials: Levy Deas v Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company.

ELIAS HILL—FROM SLAVERY AND POLIO TO SOCIAL ACTIVIST AGAINST THE KKK

Elias Hill was born enslaved in the Allison Creek area of York County. At an early age he developed polio. After the Civil War he became a landowner, educator, pastor and social activist whose testimony against the KKK led to hundreds of arrests and running the Klan out of York County in 1871. He then led a migration of 166 people from York County to Liberia, Africa. Join Rev. Dr. McGregor as he shares more about this fascinating history and leads you on a tour through the Clay Hill Graveyard. This cemetery was used in the 1800s for enslaved and free African Americans.

WINTHROP WALKING TOUR

Join alumnus Gary Simrill for a walking tour of the Winthrop campus. The tour will include historical facts and information about the people who made a difference for higher education and the architecture that endures today. Participants will also get an interior view of some of the campus buildings. A small break will be provided during the tour, but you must be able to walk and stay on your feet for at least two to two and a half hours.

MIDDLE JAMES BREWING COMPANY at the POWER HOUSE

Join brewers at the Middle James Brewing Company as they educate you on their brew process. This new venue is part of the development at the Power House, one of Rock Hill’s latest renewal projects at the University Center. LAURELWOOD CEMETERY: OLD SECTION WALKING TOUR

A walk through Laurelwood is a walk through Rock Hill from 1872 until present. Walk the Old Section of Laurelwood Cemetery where the Founding Families of Rock Hill are buried and become acquainted with the layout of the cemetery. You need to be able to stand on your feet for the duration of the tour, 1.5-2 hours.

At the Earl Scruggs Center (ESC) you will immerse yourself in an interactive journey through Earl Scruggs’ innovative career and the place that gave it shape, while celebrating how he crossed musical boundaries and defined the voice of the banjo to the world. The tour will begin with a visit to the Don Gibson Theatre followed by a self-guided tour of the ESC. We will then cross the street to have lunch at Toscano’s Bistro (additional cost). The tour will conclude with a visit to the historic Banker’s House.
