Dear Sir/Madam We are delighted to send you our new and exciting Spring 2021 catalogue, filled with a fully comprehensive range of summer-flowering bulbs. As always we have refreshed our list, and this latest publication has over 120 new or reintroduced varieties to tempt you. This year has proved the most difficult in living memory, and I am overwhelmingly grateful to all the staff at de Jager, who have worked extremely hard with wonderful good humour in what has been a very busy year. Entirely thanks to their efforts and dedication, the company has been able to thrive in these challenging times as more and more people discover the joys and benefits of gardening. Naturally our workforce’s wellbeing has been paramount, and we have of course introduced all the measures necessary - and beyond - to keep everyone as safe as possible. Meanwhile the views from our warehouse in Kent remain magnificent, and Mojo the cat who lives next door has become an indispensable member of the team! With the pronounced growth of interest in gardening since the start of the pandemic, we anticipate that there could well be an increase in demand this season and a consequent shortage of supply. I would therefore again like to stress the importance of ordering early - so please, please get your orders to us as soon as possible to ensure you are not disappointed. Furthermore, as the safety of our staff, and thereby our customers, is so important it would help enormously and be very much appreciated if, whenever possible, orders were placed by post or via our website www.dejager.co.uk For a time Dahlias were out of fashion, but recently we have seen a resurgence of interest in these magnificent and underrated flowers. We are offering a very comprehensive selection of over 90 varieties, including many new ones, to suit both borders and containers. Dahlias are simply superb: they come in a multitude of forms, are long-flowering, and provide a vast array of wonderful colours with which to brighten your late summer and early autumn garden. Mine were still in flower in late November! Moreover Dahlias make fabulous cut flowers. I could not recommend these easy-to-grow flowers more highly, and they will get bigger and better as the years go by.

While on the subject of cut flowers, our beautiful bouquets continue to be popular as people appreciate the highly attractive arrangements and top quality blooms. Each of the 9 bouquets offers fine value, and they are available to purchase in different sizes to suit all pockets and occasions. Do please visit www.dejagerfreshflowers.co.uk to order your wonderful fresh flowers. We were honoured that one of our white arrangements was used to decorate the grave of Sir Winston and Lady Churchill on VE Day 2020.

Our colour-themed mixes which we introduced in 2020 have proved extremely popular and we have expanded the range (pages 12-13). These are designed for borders, but also to provide cut flowers with which to make attractive arrangements for the home. The front cover of this catalogue features another beautiful painting, this time of the stunning Ranunculus Picotee mix (Page 38-39). This illustration has been specially commissioned from the up-and-coming botanical artist, Carol Gordon DipSBA (Dist).

We are also very proud to continue to supply bulbs to the extraordinarily worthwhile and life-changing charity Horatio’s Garden. The first garden, designed by Cleve West, opened in 2012 at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre at Salisbury District Hospital; since then it has become a national charity with the objective of providing a garden for each of the UK’s 11 specialist NHS spinal injury centres. To date four further gardens have been completed: the first designed by Joe Swift at Stoke Mandeville, the second designed by James Alexander-Sinclair at The Scottish National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow, and the third designed by Bunny Guinness at the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries in Oswestry. The fifth garden, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, is now open at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in London. The sixth garden, planned for the new Welsh Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Llandough, is being created by Sarah Price who is an award-winning Welsh garden designer. It is hoped that work will begin early in the coming year. Do read more about this inspirational charity at www.horatiosgarden.org.uk

We have been selling the Pictorial Meadows wild flower seed mixes for a number of years and these have proved to be very sought after. They are formulated by Nigel Dunnett, who is Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield. Each mix (pages 42-43) is specially designed to mimic a wild flower meadow, producing a succession of different species flowering in turn over an extremely long period. I expect you will have seen examples of Nigel’s mixes in The Queen Elizabeth London Olympic Park. Should you wish to create a wild flower corner in your garden, this will not only bring pleasure but will also, importantly, provide a haven for wildlife.

Kind customers have again sent us some beautiful pictures of their de Jager bulbs in flower, and here we show a selection: the double flowering Lotus Lilies (pages 16-17), the tropical Canna β€˜The President’ (pages 24-25) and autumn flowering Nerine Bowdenii (pages 34-35). Do please keep sending us your fine photographs for possible inclusion in future catalogues. It is so nice for us to see the results of your green fingers!

Our website www.dejager.co.uk continuously evolves to provide an even more user-friendly experience, with improved navigation and compatibility with mobile devices. Only the highest quality images are used, together with lots of information on all our available products, and the latest news and gardening tips. DAHLIAS - SET THE TONE IN MID-SUMMER

Dahlias are much prized for cutting and they are very decorative in the garden. The Dahlias we offer are in the form of tubers, and from early March onwards TOP QUALITY FIELD-GROWN TUBERS will be despatched in polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place. Dahlias thrive in rich soil, and an application of well rotted manure is most beneficial. During dry weather water liberally. Plant 75-90 cm (30-36”) apart each way. Protect from slugs.

When considering lilies in your garden, the first and most important factor to bear in mind is that they must have good drainage. Soil which remains waterlogged after rain is not suitable and will almost certainly mean an early death for any lily planted in it.

PICTORIAL MEADOWS MIXTURES

These Meadow Mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy species, designed to provide high quality flowering displays. They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield. Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn) and are formulated to produce a succession of flowering species. They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes and create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the very smallest of spaces. They provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; they can be sown formally in beds or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials. Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2010, and these mixtures have been used extensively in the Olympic Park. Sow the Annual seed mixes at a rate of 2-3g per square metre in the spring - March, April or May - and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing. The Perennial seed mixes all contain over 20 species of plants, and should be sown at a rate of 2g per square metre (except Purple Haze – 3g per sq. m.) from early autumn to late spring, with October/November being the best for medium to large scale plantings. Once established the meadow can be managed simply with an annual cut in late February. The original Pictorial Meadows mix is illustrated in the main picture opposite (taken at The Eden Project) and produces stunning displays right through until late October/November. Starting out with white, blues, pinks and reds, the tapestry turns to reds, orange and yellow in the autumn. The mix has been carefully balanced for colour and succession of flowering, and components include: Shirley Poppy, Californian Poppy, Cornflower, Fairy Toadflax, Tickseed, Red Orache and Larkspur. FH: up to 1m (39’’).

SD111

Classic Annual Mix

SD141

A carefully selected mix of pretty cornfield annuals that will flower mainly Cornfield Annual Mix in July and August, including: Field Poppy, Cornflower, Scentless Mayweed and Corncockle. FH: up to 1m (39’’).

SD151

Pastel Annual Mix

A beautiful β€˜strawberries & cream’ mix of pink and white with a scattering of clear blue. This mix is particularly impressive towards the end of the flowering period, when blues take over from pinks as the dominant colour theme. A gentle blending of elements such as: Bishop’s Flower, Cosmos, Cornflower and Shirley Poppy. FH: up to 1m (39’’).

Pixie Annual Mix

A mix suited especially to more restricted or compact situations, but having the same long-flowering characteristics of the standard mixture; components include: Fairy Toadflax, Red Flax, Shirley Poppy, Love-in-amist, Candytuft and Blue Flax. FH: up to 50 cm (20’’).

SD201

Magic Carpet Perennial Mix

A quick flowering β€˜hybrid’ mix which combines colourful meadow annuals, biennials and short term perennials. Designed to flower well for three seasons, including the year of seeding if sown in spring. Particularly suitable for temporary landscapes and where rapid results are needed, this mix includes Yellow Chamomile, Evening Primrose, Purple Mullein, Spike Speedwell, Baby’s Breath, Catchfly and Musk Mallow. FH: up to 50 cm (20’’).

SD211

Golden Summer Perennial Mix

A warm, vibrant mixture for normal fertility soils. Mostly yellows and golds with white, hints of orange and flashes of later purples, our most popular perennial mix performs best in free-draining, sunny spots. SD221

Purple Haze Perennial Mix

A beautiful, cool, elegant combination for normal fertility soils, this mix will perform quite happily in semi-shade. Predominantly mauve and blue with billows of white and flashes of purple, it includes Michaelmas Daisy, Greater Knapweed, Field Scabious, Wild Carrot, Perennial Flax, Purple Coneflower, Ox-eye Daisy and Columbine. FH: up to 50 cm (20’’).

SD231

Treasure Chest Perennial Mix

A gorgeous, robust and very richly coloured carpet designed for a long flowering season on normal fertility soils. Includes Great Burnet, Macedonian Scabious, Wild Marjoram, Oriental Poppy, Cowslip, Betony and Woodland Sage. FH: up to 50 cm (20’’).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Is there any grass seed content? A. There is no grass content to the mixes. Don’t mix with grass as it will kill off the flowers. Q. Can I just scatter the flowers over existing grass to create a meadow effect? A. Unfortunately not - the seeds have to be sown on bare soil. Q. Will the annual mixes self-seed? A. Only some of the species in the annual mixes will. To get the same effect you have to resow each year. Q. Will birds eat the seed ? A. No, they are too small for them to notice. Q. Will the mixes work in Sandy/Chalky/Clay soil ? A. Yes. They will work on all types of soil, but for these mixes, the better the soil the better the result.

Q. Do I need to water the seeds if it doesn’t rain once I’ve sown them? A. For annuals no there is usually enough rain eventually and if you over-water they could rot before they germinate. However, if there is prolonged drought after you have sown then you could try watering once a week. Perennials are more demanding and we recommend irrigation in Spring. Q. Will the mixes work in shady areas? A. Yes, but the mixes do need sunshine at some point during the day. Q. Can I combine the annual and perennial seed mixes? A. We don’t recommend this, as each seed mix is carefully formulated to produce a specific result. Q. How long will the seed keep if I don’t use it all? A. Usually for several years - keep stored in a cool dry place.

PLANTING DEPTH Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deep or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil one and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to the shoulder. Thus a bulb measuring 2 inches from the base to the shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil. Always unpack bulbs on arrival and leave bags open so air can circulate until planting.
