Jamaica Energy Partners (JEP) and West Kingston Power Plant (WKPP) spent Saturday cleaning the Palisadoes strip, as their contribution to International Beach Clean-up Day.

The day went according to plan, with staff members, family, friends and other volunteers, including two youth clubs, able to leave the area clean, despite finding it in a terrible state, according to the companies’ CEO Wayne McKenzie.

McKenzie said: “What is disturbing is that every year we leave the beach pretty clean and the next time, it is like what we went there and saw. I understand though that this is not peculiar to Jamaica, as some of the stuff is washed up from other islands.”

McKenzie said this is part of the companies’ way of giving back. He said plans are presently in process, for the companies to adopt a beach and keep it clean throughout the year, instead of only doing so on International Beach Clean-up Day.

During the day on Saturday, JEP and WKPP also collected data on the type of garbage that was found on the beach.

JEP also did some work this year at Old Harbour Bay Beach in an effort to complete a process that was started last year.

McKenzie explained that apart from the beach clean-up, both companies also help the environment by planting trees.

He said, “this (beach clean-up) is part of our way of giving back as we will also be going into the Blue Mountain, at Holleywell and plant some 300 trees later this year. We emit greenhouse gas from our plants, so this is to mitigate the damage to the environment by planting trees.”
