Area 7 – Reticulata Section

Area 7 – Notes.

This is a very steep area where getting plants established without falling over has clearly been a problem, with several plants lying on their sides, usually downhill. Two or three others were badly damaged by a falling tree rhododendron in 2016, making it a little unclear what has survived in the bottom left hand corner.

C. x williamsii ‘Ballet Queen Variegated’ (7-010) was labelled ‘Diamond Head’, which it clearly wasn’t and the label has now been changed. It may have been the variety used as a rootstock but seems an odd choice. There is very little reason to keep it.

‘Yojimbo’, (7-028), is an unregistered seedling of C. ‘Mary Williams’ (7-021) planted October 2019.

(7-014) was labelled ‘Forty-niner’ which it clearly isn’t. It may have been the rootstock for that variety; it has a reticulata type leaf but unusually long and narrow, and pale pink flowers that usually hang down.

(7-025) was labelled ‘William Hertrich’  but is not. It looks like a reticulata seedling that has been used as rootstock and is not very good.
