  • Broadleaf evergreen shrub, slowly to 4-6 ft (1.2-1.8 m), stem bark grayish, peeling as thin, wide sheets.  Leaves opposite, 5–10 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide, narrowly elliptic, leathery, margin generally rolled under, or entire or toothed, green above, whitish below.  Flowers at terminal, 3–6 cm wide, fragrant, 5-8 white petals, 15–25 mm, many yellow stamen; (white flowers with yellow centers, anemone like).
  • Sun or some shade, ordinary garden conditions.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 8    Native range endemic (limited) to California, common in the Sierra Nevada foothills on dry rocky ridges between 1500-4000 ft (450-1200 m).
