  • Broadleaf deciduous tree, moderate growth rate of 15-20 inches (38-50 cm) per year, reaching a mature size of 30-35 ft by 15-20 ft wide (9-10.5 m × 4.5-7.6); initially an upright habit and later developing a broad pyramidal form.   Blooms appear in mid to late spring before the leaves; the flowers are a rich rose-pink to reddish-purple on the outside and lighter inside and about 12.5 cm long and with 11-12 tepals.

  • Hardy to USDA Zone 5     ‘Galaxy’ was derived from a cross of M. liliflora ‘Nigra’ × M. sprengrei ‘Diva’ by William Kosar of the U.S. National Arboretum in 1963 and it was released in 1980.  Flowers are fragrant, unlike that of either parent, sweet-scented and recalling cotton candy (Jacobson, 1996).  It received the Award of Garden Merit for the Royal Horticultural Sociey in 1993.
