Word Nerd: Diablerie

Word Nerd Header Apr 2016 via LaWhimsydiablerie definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsyDiablerie is the quality of being reckless or wild in a charismatic way. Diablerie also means magic or witchcraft connected with devils. Diablerie derives from the French diablerie (mischief), which is from Old French deablerie (sorcery), which comes from the Latin diabolus (the devil), which in turn is from the Greek diabolos (enemy, Satan). Quite the language line, no?

Diablerie is what is most commonly thought of when the average person thinks of a witch or witchcraft, though in truth, diablerie is more accurately tied to the Satanic or to Satanism. Diablerie has hints of danger, recklessness, wild, untamed evils, and so forth. Diablerie is spoken of in hushed tones, with glances over the shoulder.

Diablerie is a rather delightful word and one I plan on using since I do so enjoy exploring the darker, misunderstood sides of things. Diablerie – what do you think of it?

Namaste ~ Ella
