An aqueous hydrotropic solution as environmentally benign reaction medium for organic transformations: a short review

  • Published:
Research on Chemical Intermediates Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

Hydrotropes are a class of amphiphilic molecules that significantly increase the solubility of organic compounds in water. However, it cannot form well-organized structures, such as micelles by surfactants. Hydrotropes are extremely water-soluble surface-active organic salts which increase the solubility of practically insoluble or sparingly soluble organic compounds in water by almost 200 times. The fundamental physico-chemical properties of hydrotropes, hydrotropic mechanism, and interactions of the compounds with hydrotropes are well elaborated earlier. However, the use of hydrotropes in organic transformation fascinated new attention. This is the first review which explores various organic transformations comprising utilization hydrotropes.
