Summary
Orania Zipp. (Oranieae: Arecoideae: Arecaceae) is a genus of solitary, single stemmed tree palms consisting of 28 species, of which 11 species are new and described for the first time in this paper. The genus has an interesting disjunct distribution, with 25 species found in Malesia and three species confined to Madagascar. The 11 new species, O. bakeri A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. dafonsoroensis A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. deflexa A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. ferruginea A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. grandiflora A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. littoralis A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. longistaminodia A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. subdisticha A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. tabubilensis A. P. Keim & J. Dransf., O. timikae A. P. Keim & J. Dransf. and O. zonae A. P. Keim & J. Acknowledgements
We are grateful to the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and the World Bank through the Global Environment Facility-Biodiversity Collection Project for financial support. Many people have helped us through good advice, suggestions and support. In particular, we would like to thank William J. Baker, Scott Zona, Johanis Mogea, Rudi Maturbongs, Charlie Heatubun and Himmah Rustiami. Herbarium specimens have been studied from the following herbaria: A, BO, FI, FTG, K, L, MAN and NY. We are grateful to the directors of these institutions for allowing us to study their valuable materials. A team of MSc students from Imperial College London supervised by Dr Lauren Gardiner at Kew used Orania as an exercise in conservation rating and we are grateful to them for calculating areas of occurrence and extents of occurrence for the Malesian species. We thank Dr Mijoro Rakotoarinivo for providing conservation ratings for the species from Madagascar. Our deepest gratitude is also sent to Lucy Smith for the beautiful analytical drawings. Finally, we dedicate this publication to the people of Papua and Papua Barat.
