Identification of Common Cold-Climate Grapes in North America

Taming the Wild Grape

Abstract

This chapter deals with the science of ampelography, the identification of cultivated grapevines. It begins with a history of grapevine identification up to the present use of molecular identification techniques. This is followed by detailed descriptions and figures of 30 cold-climate cultivars (although some closely related cultivars are grouped) listed in alphabetical order. Aside from two well-known European selections of Vitis vinifera, the rest have a complex parentage that includes several species of Vitis, consisting of nine French hybrids, three traditional North American hybrids and twelve North American hybrids that have been bred since the 1960s.

For each cultivar, there is a brief discussion of its history and parentage followed by a description of its morphological features tied to the accompanying illustrations. These include the growth habit of the vines, young shoot characters, leaf shape and hair features, flowers and inflorescences, berry and flesh colour, seed beak features, and cluster growth habit. There is also a brief summary of the viticulture and oenology characters and uses. A summary table for each cultivar is also included.
