Abstract

Carapace subhexagonal to transversely oval, usually broader than long, flat, slighlty convex, regions not well-defined, posterior surface with transverse ridges, epibranchial ridge present; anterolateral margins with spines, with distint junction with posterolateral margin, usually marked with epibranchial spine. Front broad, straight, dentate or lobate. First maxillipeds with lobe on endopodite known as “portunid lobe”. Third maxillipeds completely covering buccal cavern, ischium distinctly longer than merus. Antennules folded transversely. Antennae with long basal antennal segment. Chelipeds distinctly robust, long, segments normally spinose, movable finger with longitudinal ridges. Walking legs 3 and 4 with propodus and dactylus paddle-shaped. Abdomen of males with somite 3–5 tightly fused; abdomen of females with free-moving somites. G1 long, rubost; G2 shorter than G1. Genital opening of males coxal. Genital opening of females sternal.
