Drug- and Toxin-Induced Nephritides

Anti-Kidney Antibody and Immune Complex Mediation

  • Chapter
Nephrotoxic Mechanisms of Drugs and Environmental Toxins

Abstract

Current evidence suggests that drugs and toxins can damage the kidney through humoral immunologic mechanisms. These pathways of nephritogenic humoral immune injury will be described in this chapter, and several ways in which drugs and toxins potentially play a role will be outlined. Particular attention will be given to hydrocarbons as a toxic agent that has been reported to induce at least one kind of anti-kidney antibody response, namely that directed toward the renal basement membranes.
